THE BRITISH NAVY

BEHIND IN CONSTRUCTION CAUSE FOR ALARM Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 22. (Received January 23, at 9 a.m.) The ‘ Daily Telegraph ’ says that naval circles expect that the 1933 Estimates will he substantially above those of 1932. During the past year the relative sea strengths of the Powers have altered, greatly to the disadvantage of Britain. At the present rate of construction Britain, when the London Treaty expires in 1936, will be short of its treaty allocations by 106,220 tons in cruisers and 85,619 tons in destroyers and submarines, which is causing anxiety and alarm, especially as three years hence one-third of our cruiser tonage will be obsolete.
