SHARK CHASING

ACTIVE IH LOWER HARBOUR After an interval of several years, shark chasing lias been active in the lower harbour for several days past. Bait was laid for a largo shark which had been seen well down tho lower harbour last week. Next day the shark was reported to have been seen at the islands halfway up the harbour. A special interest attached to its presence at tho islands because no large shark has so far been known to navi-> gate the Victoria channel. There are indications, though no direct evidence, that it returned to tho Kaik at the week-end. Old-timers are recalling shark hunts in the lower harbour. One shark of those days was harpooned at tho islands and it towed three or four rowing boats to Deborah Bay and back again before the harpoon lost its hold. Another remarkable hunt took place when a Chinaman’s liorso fell over the hnrhoursid© bank and _ was. killed. The floating carcase was tackled by a large shark near tho islands. That shark was harpooned and towed two or three rowing boats well down the lower harbour before it was despatched with a whal-. ing lance. Probably the most remarkable shark hunt in the lower harbour resulted in tho capture of the large shark now in tho Museum, That was larger than tho ordinary big shark, which usually ranged in length from lift to 17ft, Sharks which have been Seen but not captured were usually large. About three years ago a large shark was observed basking against a sand bank near tho Kaik. It was reckoned to bo fully as long as the 30ft launch from which it was seen. Tho late Mr J. Noble was a remarkable shark hunter, and he usually captured one every summer.
