AMUSEMENTS, Extract from the ‘ Otago Daily Times,’ 21/1/33. GRAND THEATRE Since British pictures reached the degree of excellence that they have now achieved many fine films have been shown in Dunedin, and, although up to the present comedies have been predominant, the efforts of the English producers in the direction of the drama have received one of the best advrtisements possible in ‘ Michael and Mary,’ the magnificent Gainsborough film that was shown at the Grand Theatre for the first ume yesterday. The British film companies have done a very wise thing in recruiting successful stage players, and not relying on the development of a school of film actors. It is doubtful that two more thoroughly suited players could have been found for the roles of Michael and Mary than Herbert Marshall and Edna Best, each of a distinctive type, yet blending together perfectly to present one of the most satisfying stories that has been seen in Dunedin. This picture is a thing of innate sincerity, of instant conviction, and of great emotional appeal. Herbert Marshall, who has had a very successful career on the stage, both in London and New York, possesses a commanding bearing and a remarkable voice, besides an intimate knowledge of stagecraft, and if ‘ Michael and Mary ’ is a standard of his capability the more of his films that arc shown in Dunedin the better. ‘ Michael and Mary ’ simply must be seen by anyone who has a taste for the most convincing type of drama, and should draw full houses during the coming week. The supporting programme is one that fully conforms to the standard of the principal picture and presents items of a topical and diversified nature. The box plans are at Begg’s and the theatre. A. A.
