VISIT TO WAIPUKURAU [Per United Press Association.] WAIPUKURAU, January 20. The Governor-General (Lord Bledisloo) and Lady Bledisloe paid their first visit to Waipukurau to-day, arriving; by the afternoon express. They were formally welcomed by the deputy-mayor (Mr lan Mackie), and were presented with an address in the presence of representatives of the central Hawke’s Bay local bodies and the Chamber of Commerce and a largo assemblage of residents. Lord Bledisloe, in the course of an address covering dominion and Empire economic problems, pointed to the need for maintaining a high quality of exports, for which there would always be a demand. He briefly referred to the Ottawa Conference and to the call for reciprocal trading to strengthen the purchasing ability of British consumers. When butter was placed on the Home market, he said, care should be taken to see that it was not sold as or blended with “ best New Zealand.” “ I would like to impress upon you,” he said, “ that the gospel of national harmony is the surest road to prosperity, happiness, and security. All sections of the community should think of country first and themselves secondly, which would be to their own advantage.” He paid a fine tribute to the Boy Scout movement, referring to its principles of service and mentioning his office as Dominion Chief Scout. . The Vice-regal partly left subsequently for Napier.
