VERSES
EVENING . i - ■' ' < Green, and grey are the cold round bills . That the young' white lambs infold, Far and thin is the lambs’ bleating Like little hautboys old. Hedgehog, stoat, and lizard, all To -their varied slumbers pass, Save beneath, where the mole’s throw- ’ , ing Hillocks “hlong the grass. Very light is the little sleep ’ That the crickets lie in still Very soon will their sweet chirping Sound over field and hill. Crimson now grows the evening sky, In the cots the lamps are lit, Hollow tree hears the owl stirring, The bats begin to flit. —J. M'Leod, in the ‘ Observer.’
