RIFLE ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Otago Rifle Association was .held in the Y.M.C.A. last night. An attendance of about thirty members was presided over by Colonel E. R. Smith. In moving the adoption of the annual report (already published), the Chairman said that the large attendance augured well for the Easter competition. The association had gone hack to tho extent of £9 in its funds during the year, but though there was a debit it was satisfactory that things were no worse, and he was convinced that the association was run on the best lines, which made for efficiency in all respects. Tho association was now about seventy years old, tho first meeting having been held on, February 24, 1863, in the Town Board office. Mr J. Hyde Harris was chairman, and the following office-bearers were elected ;—Secretary, Mr W. G. Heramingham; treasurer, Mr F. C. Leggett; Provincial Committee to draw up rules—Messrs O’Meagher, W. G. Jackson, H. Smith, Gillies, Calder, Murray, and Hogg. The first rifle meeting was held in 1865. The members of the present association had every reason to look for success in the coming year. Those who had been on the range recently were very pleased with its condition. A good deal of labour had been put into improvements there, wtih tho result that the 500yds mound was now one of the best on the range. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICE-BEARERS. The following office-bearers were elected';—Patron, Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Minister of Defence) ; vice-patron, Lieutenant-colonel Nicholls (commanding southern command) ; president, Colonel E. R. Smith; vice-presidents— Colonel J. M. Hayne, Colonel J. H. Moir, Sir James Allen, Colonel G. Barclay, Major P. Mackenzie, Major F. Waite, Major 0. Mead, Captain G. Proudfoot, R. S. Black (Mayor ’of Dunedin), Mr W. B. Taverner, and presidents of rifle dubs in Otago; lion.

secretary and treasurer, Rifleman C. H. M'Keich; auditor, President W. Bannorman ; executive—President R. Bruce, President W. Bannerman, Deputy-president F. W. Clayton, Riflemen J. M'Night, Q. H. Smith, J. Benfell, D. Parsons, R. K, Johnston, H. Whitehead, and P. Fonnessey. GENERAL, ft was resolved that the annual prizetiring take jdace at Easter - (April 14, 15, 17).
