Mr C. J. Pugsley, who for the past six years has been branch manager of the Southern Cross Assurance Company, has received notice of transfer to Wellington on promotion. The Cornwell Cup crew, comprised of E. M. Walker (skipper) and A. J. Pratt, with Mr R, H. Cafdno as manager and delegate, left for Lyttelton this morning. The Cornwell Cup contests begin on Wednesday next. A P.A. cable message from Sydney states that having accepted the appointment of Agent-General in London for Western Australia, Sir Hal Colebatch intends resigning from the Federal Senate. This will be Sir Hal Colebatch’s’ second term as Agent-General.-A Press Association cable message from London states that Sir Vansittart Bowater leaves London on February B for India, thence Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, on a health trip. Sir Vansittart Bowater has been tha member for City of London in Parliament since 1924, and was Lord Mayor of London, 1913-14. _ A Press Association cable message from London states that Sir Mark Sheldon is suffering from influenza, which has affected one-third of the New Zealand Government staff.

The death has occurred at Sydney, at the age of sixty-four years, of Mr William G. Thomas, who was at one time resident in Oamaru, where he was born. The deceased received his early education at the Oamaru South School,and later entered the teaching profession. He was an outstanding athlete,and distinguished himself especially on the football field. He was recognised as the finest full-back in the dominion, and represented the Oamaru Club, Otago, and South Island, playing for; the latter in two matches against Stoddart’s English team. The late Mr Thomas played for the Union Club in Dunedin and represented Otago in ten matches during 1887 and 1889. The deceased w-as a brother of Mr Hugh Thomas, of Christchurch, who was for many years a well-known and popular resident of Oamaru.

The many friends of Mr Ernest Clowes, general manager of the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company of New Zealand Ltd., will be pleased to learn that he has made a good recovery from his recent_ illness. He left by the'Second express this morning for a further two or three weeks*' convalescence in the north, and expects to resume his duties early in February.-
