TENNIS CHAMPIONS

HEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT YESTERDAY’S PLAY [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 19. The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were continued this morning in fine but cloudy weather, with a north wind blowing, in the afternoon conditions were ideal.

There were no surprises in the third round of the men’s singles. Barnett, Stedman, Alalfroy, Angas, and Andrews had easy matches, although R. A. Court extended Alalfroy in the first set, passing him with beautiful side-line drives. Thereafter Court missed numerous easy ground strokes, and was'never in the hunt against Alalfroy’s volleying. Dennis Coorabe by brilliant crosscourt volleying and low-down and accurate driving down the side-lines fully extended Norman Sturt, who was mistiming Ids volleys and pushing his forehand and backhand drives out over the side-lines. Sturt was compelled to play more carefully in the last two sets to run Coombe out of position before going to the net. Coombe tired towards the end.

llhodes-Williams' stroked beautifully from the back line on both wings, or else Jobbed to the backhand corner as his opponent took the net, to beat N. R. C. Wilson in four sets. Wilson made the majority of liis mistakes into the net. '

In the ladies’ singles Aliss N. Welsh had set points against Aliss B. Knight at 5-3, but lost the advantage with wild hitting. Aliss Knight would not bestir herself up to that point, and then she went to the net and out-vol-leyed and out-drove Aliss Welsh. For the first time Aliss D. Howe has beaten Aliss AI. Andrew, but she beat a. Miss Andrew who is well below her old form. Aliss Howe was steady, and her cuts forced Aliss Andrew to the net. If she had to run for them' Aliss Andrew preferred to let them go.

Airs H. AI. Dykes beat Aliss Thelma Poole in a brilliant base-line driving game, in which the latter gave an exhibition seldom seen in tournaments. Aliss Poole had set points in the first set at 5-4 and 40-15. She drove with perfect length and great pace, but it was stuff with which Airs Dykes was quite at home, and she swapped drive for drive and one more.

Aliss E. Rudkin beat Aliss AI. Rutherford, conqueror of Airs Alclody, in a base-line game in which the winner placed more accurately,'hit harder, and kept.fetter, court positin' l , and served'

The- outstanding game in the' doubles was a five-set encounter .khfe tween Seay and Alalfroy and RhodesWilliams and Barnett. The former won through greater aggressiveness at the net, the losers’ lobbing too often being short and their combination fre--qncntlv mixed. The losers also drove when they ought to have lobbed, and this error in tactics cost them many games. Rhodes-Williams was also weak overhead, and hung too far back on the service line to be caught at the feet or compelled to volley up, which is fatal against such brilliant net exponents as their opponents. The serving of the winners was also much stronger. In the closing stages last night the veteran A. G. Wallace and the lefthander, George Pearce, a scratch pair, pressed France brothers in five sets of brilliant tennis. Pearce was especially outstanding in volleying and smashing. Failing light caused Wallace, who had been volleying delightfully, to mishit. Len. France was the handicap to Don, keeping on the service line and being caught at the feet.

The winners in the ladies’ doubles all won their matches decisively, there being no surprises. Vera Burns, holder of the girls’ singles, was beaten by Alary Sinclair, who hits a hard ball on the forehand. The loser made too many outs in the first and third sets. Results:—
