NEW YEAR GOLF
TOURNAMENT AT ST. CLAIR DUHEDIH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP The course at St. Clair was in excellent order for the New Year golf tour-, nament, and the weather for the first day was ideal; but yesterday the players had to contend with most unsuitable conditions, despite which, however, some very creditable scores weie returned. Garden (St. Clair) 92, 89—181. # A stroke handicap was played in conjunction with the qualifying rounds, and it resulted as follows: —Senior event, morning round, winner B. C. O’Driscoll, 71. less handicap 8, 63. The junior event resulted in a tie between E. Drake (81—16—65) and R. H. Booth (86—21—65). The senior event, afternoon round, was won by A. Lawrence, 72—4—68, and the junior event by A, B. Watt, 83—21—62. , Yesterday the play comprised the first two rounds of match play in each of the championship events, which resulted as follows :—Dunedin amateur championship (first round): ,B. V. Wright defeated F. Sherriff 7 and 5, J. E. Matheson defeated K. Ross 3 and 2, A. Lawrence defeated D. S. M'Lean 4 and 3, D. C. Bennie defeated S. E. Field 4 and 2, W. G. Wight defeated J. W. MTntosh 4 and 3, T. B. Ferguson defeated I. Orr 4 and 2, W. Clayton defeated B. C. O’Driscoll 3 and 2 J. A. Scouler defeated A. Davie 5 and 4. The second round, which was played in heavy rain, resulted:—J. E. Matheson defeated B. V. Wright 1 up at- the nineteenth, D. C. Bennie defeated A. Lawrence 3 and 2, W. G. Wight defeated T. B. Ferguson 1 up, W. Clayton defeated J. A. Scouler 3 and 1. ~ Otago junior amateur championship —First round: O. L. Garden defeated E. Drake 2 up, D. Wright defeated E. G. M'George 4 and 3, M. O’Dnscoll defeated W. S. Stewart 3 and 2, E. N. Elder defeated P. Kidd 3 and 2, A. B. Watt defeated H. Boock 4 and 3, G. Burnett defeated R, H.- Booth 5 and 4, W. G. Melton defeated A. H. Myles 1 up at the twentieth, D. Swift defeated L. Coates 4 and 3. Second round: O. L. Garden defeated D. Wright 4 and 3, E. N. Elder defeated M. O’Driscoll 2 up, G. Burnett defeated A. B. Watt 4 and 3, D. Swift defeated W. G. Melton 3 and 2. , . A bogey handicap was also played in the morning and resulted in a tie between W. Fordyce (handicap 7) all square and C, C. Anderson (handicap 11) all square. , The four-ball bogey, handicap in the afternoon was won by F. Sherriff (7) and A. J. P. Bestic (11) with a score of 4 up, which was a good effort under the unsuitable weather conditions. RESULTS OF SEMI-FINALS. The semi-finals of the amateur championship were played at the St. Clair links this morning, and resulted as follow: — W. G. Wight (Otago) heat W. Clayton (St. Clair), 4 and 3. , _ D. C. Berime (St. Clair) beat J. E. Matheson (St. Clair), 2 and 1. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. In the junior championship the semifinals, played this morning, resulted:— E. W. Elder (St. Clair) beat O. L. Garden (St. v Clair), 6 and 4. D. Swift (St. Clair) beat G. Burnett (St. Clair), 1 up.
