UNEMPLOYMENT

MDSGIEL RELIEF COMMITTEE TJio Mosgiel District Unemployment .Relict _ Committee, consisting of representatives of the churches, ladies’ organisations, Taieri County Connell, and tlie Mosgiel Borough Council, has been functioning for some two years, assisting families of unemployed workers in alt parts of the district. At this time last year an appeal was made for funds for a Christmas cheer fund. The response was so good that the committee was enabled to make a number of homes a little brighter during the festive season, and tiie committee is making an appeal to the residents of the district to subscribe to a fund again this year. There is still a very largo number of registered unemployed workers in this district, and consequently there are many homes with young children who will not in the ordinary course participate in tlie festivities as will children in the homes of parents who arc still enjoying the benefits of .regular employment. To assist these families tliis appeal is being made. Subscriptions may bo forwarded to AY. JO. M'Lean, W. E. Lambert, John Logan (county clerk), and R. D. Rogers (town clerk). ROSLYN DEPOT The response to the appeal for Christmas cakes for the Roslyu depot has been very gratifying to the committee, but several more arc required to meet tho need. Donors would greatly oblige by leaving their cakes at the Salvation Army Hall or at Mr Pollock’s on or before December 22. It has been decided to close the central depot after Saturday and reopen on Wednesday, January 4. All coal orders received up to 5 p.m. on i Tuesday next will be delivered before Christmas, and all orders received up to ' 5 p.m. on Friday, December 23, will bo delivered between Christmas and New Year. All later orders will require to wait until January 4. Major Lamond, officer in charge of tho depot, gratefully acknowledges tlie receipt of the following goods per medium of tho “ Pound a Week ” scheme, those being received from tho following tradespeople:—Messrs Arndt and Co., 53 packages; Butterfield, 5: j Goodley and Son, 71 (Boslyn and .Maori TTill> ; Hislop, 7; Hunter, 12; I.Kingston, 8; Laureuson and Sou, 22; | Mitchell, 10; M'Dowell, 7; M'Loau, G; M’Farlane, 4; M‘Kay Bros., 03; M'Kinlay, 2; Shirley, 28; Simpson, 2; Misses Robertson, 2; Badcock, 3.” In addition several individual givers are thanked for their gifts, including a case of apples from Mr Bennett. Tho depot continues to meet tlie need of a number of grateful people. Eightysix families were supplied with provisions last Friday. HO. 3 BISECT Tho depot iu Dowling street will bo open for coal orders to-morrow, from 10 a.m. to noon, and again, on Friday, 23rd. It should bo noted that orders on the 23rd cannot bo delivered until after Christmas. For January the depot will bo open on each Friday morning. j The amount allowed by the central j executive for Christmas gifts will be I used to the best advantage by the depot I officials. Mr Stevely (chairman ot : the committee), both paid tribute to the tact and faithfulness of these voluntary workers. Thanks arc also duo to Mr J. M'Aclam, Mr F. Foote, Sir J. Heaney, Mr J. Hold, and others who had rendered valuable asistanco at the depot. The secretary (Air J. Ironside), on his own behalf and also on behalf of the committee, expressed appreciatin'.!. The committee is indebted to Messrs Speight and Co, for the free use of the rooms in Dowling street. The executive endorsed a recommendation from the Women’s Committee of the No. depot to the central executive for a conference of representatives of all district depots, to be held before the end of January, to consider matters of policy and procedure for the incoming year. ST. HILDA CHEER -U ihe final meeting of the Mayor's Children’s Christmas Cheer Committee the iinal arrangements were made in respect to the picnic on Saturday, December 17. The committee wishes to remind all donors of cakes and toys that the depot, St. Hilda Town Hall, will bo open on Friday, December IG, for the reception of these promised articles, the hours being from 9 a.in. till 111 and 1 p.m. till 1 p.m. The commit!
