AMATEUR ATHLETICS

CIVIL SERVICE CLUB’S SUCCESS Good racing was witnessed at the evening track and field meet staged by the Otago Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association at the Caledonian Ground last night, large fields being the order in the running events, and a large crowd of spectators was provided with some fine finishes. The sprinters had the assistance of a strong breeze, and the times returned in the 100yds handicap were fast, the track being in good order. The winner of this event was J. Gerken, off 61yds, and it is rather noteworthy that he has achieved success over every distance up to 440yds this season, as well as in field events. Gerken is a member of the Civil Service club which put up rather an outstanding performance in winning every running event on the programme, the 440yds falling to A. R. Geddes, who brought to light a good finish, his time (52 4-ssec) being quite a good effort. He was off 20yds, but finished undistressed. The I,oooyds handicap was won by G. Spence, also of Civil Service, while second and third places were also filled by members of this club. The 880yds relay completed Civil Service’s run of success, while the shot putt went to L. M. 'Wright, of the Anglican Club, the best performance, however, being put up by J. F. Henderson, a Canterbury College athlete, whose effort was 36ft lin. The cycling events were not so well supported as the running, but they were keenly contested, J. Fogarty winning the half-mile in good style and A. Blaekie the mile and a-half. The half-mile was marred by serious mishap, F. Greenfield being the victim of one of the worst spills seen on the Caledonian Ground for some time. His sprint tyro blew out while he was in the lead, and negotiating the bend before entering the back stretch. He came down heavily, and O. Oakes, unable to avoid him, also fell. It was a wonder the remainer of the bold was not also involved in a serious smash. Oakes escaped any serious miurv, but Greenfield was so badly hurt that be had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. Results:—

Spence set a fast pace early in proceedings, and though the scratch man, M'Laren, made a good effort to reduce the leeway over the first (300yds it could be seen that his task of heading the front bunch was almost hopeless, Spence maintaining his position to win by syds from Ross, who beat Asher by 90yds. the last-named coming with a late run.
