BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

OVER-SUPPLIES CAUSE POOSI MARKET With the highest price : for cattle standing at £9 2s Cd, and values in! this section showing an all-round drop,; those who .-forwarded. stocks-to tho Burnside sales to-day had little causa for jubilation. At this time of tho year bigger yardings than during tho winter months are expected, but today’s entry, of 370 head was over the estimated figure. Consequently tha over supply caused a drop of 20s a head all round, and in some cases 30s a head.. Prime ox beef was worth only T7s fid 1001 b, very little of the penning touching 20s. ; Cows and ■ heifers dropped back as well, being equal to 14s and 15s 1001 b. Consignments of the best bullocks were sent in from Timaru, Balclutha, and Kelsoi but only one. Gained the highest price already quoted,, his was from Mrs Grant, while the rest of tho heavy cattle sold from £7 10s to £8" 10s. A large number ofi handy-weight bullocks, was entered, but could only bring from £6 10s to £7| 10s. Heavy cows experienced a decline; in value, £3 to £5 10s. Authorities, hold the opinion that to-day’s sale waa the worst on record for an appreciable period. Sales: —Donald lleid and Co. i Heavy bullocks, £8 12s, fid; medium,; £7 2s fid to £7 17s fid; light, £5 7s fid to £6 17s fid; medium heifers, £5 7s fid; light, £4 17s fid; medium cows, £4 17s fid to £5 7s fid; light, £3 2s fid to £4 7s fid. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency r' Medium bullocks, £7 7s fid; light £5 2s _ fid to £6 17s fid. A good deal of* this company’s cattle was passed. National Mortgage and Agency Co.; Light bullocks, £5 7s fid to £6 12s fid; light cows, £4 7s fid. The National Mortgage also passed a number of cattle,Stronach, Morris, and Co.: Extra heavy bullocks, £9 2s fid; heavy, £8 7s fid: medium, £6 17s fid to £7 12s 6d;i light, £5 12s fid to £6 2s fid; medium heifers, £5 7s fid; light, £4 17s fid; 1 medium cows, £4 17s fid; light', £3 2s fid to £4 2s fid; Fat lambs did not escape from th» slide in prices, these being back at the beginning from 2s to 3s fid a head compared with last week, and as tha sale progx-essed there was a further decrease, until the lambs were selling well under the prices offered by tho freezers at the qpening. • The reason for this decrease in values was the same as with the cattle—there was an oversupply. The top price was reached quite early in the sale, when extra heavies realised 13s fid, but the majority until then brought from 11s to 12s. Real good heavy lambs were worth only 3Jd lb, and prime lightweights about 4d lb. Out of an entry of 2,000 fat sheep only four or five trucks of prime wethers were sent in. Ordinary quality made up the balance. Owing to the approach of the holiday season it was, not expected that there would be a .big demand for sheep, so prices in that case would be down. A line of light steers in the store pens met with a very dragging sale, selling to £3 10s.’ The usual number of old cows making up the rest of tha yarding sold at late rates. There was not a very large yarding of pigs, _ 124 fats and twenty-seven stores being included. These were selling at last week’s prices. There is to be a double sale next week, the last before Christmas, and as the butchers are wanting their lamb purchases killed the same day in order to he ready for the usual rush period .the lambs will be sold first.
