CRUELTY TO CATS
UNUSUAL GASES IN DUNEDIN Two extraordinary cases of cruelty inflicted upon ordinary domestic cats were,_ reported by the inspector of the Otago" Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at yesterday’s meeting. In reply to a complaint, the inspector had visited the locality—a suburb of Dunedin—and was shown a cat which had to be drowned because some person or persons had cut out the animal’s tongue. It was also reported to him that another cat had r'eturned home with a piece of wire threaded through and tied around its.hind legs. Unfortunately he had been unable to trace the culprit, but had placed the matter in the hands of the local constable to obtain further information. Mr R. Fountain: More than one individual must be concerned in this case; it would he impossible for one man to hold a cat and perform such a dastardly operation. In reply to a question the inspector said that several notorious characters lived, in the neighbourhood where the cats belonged, and it was expected that the culprits would be discovered. . Another member expressed the opinion that anybody who would perform such an act must be mentally deficient. “ Unfortunately we are unable to do anything further in the matter until further particulars are obtained,” said the chairman.
