EARLY SETTLERS
ASSOCIATION'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday afternoon. In the absence of the president (Mr J. J. Mallard), Mr F. W. Knight (past president) was in the chair. Also present were: Messrs E. Webster, James Brown, W. Nicolsou, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, A. Eccles, J. Wallace, E. C. Hazlett, W. H. Kerens, R. H. Steele, and C. C. Robertson. The following gifts were received and votes of thanks passed to the donors: — From Robert Murray (Clarksville)— framed portrait of his late mother, Mrs R. Murray (nee Esson), Jura, 1858; William Sutherland (Kaka Point)— framed portrait of his late father, John Sutherland, Bast Taieri, Annin, 1859, also a number of interesting maps; Mrs J. H. Gill (Wellington)—framed portraits of her late parents, Mr and Mrs William Milne, Caversham, Viola, 1863 (Mr Milne was for over forty years head master at Caversham School); F. H. Campbell (High School Rectory)—copper token dated 1863, found on High School grounds; Murray G. Thomson—Jubilee Souvenir Booklet of South Dunedin Presbyterian Church, 1830-1930; North-east Valley Presbyterian Church Jubilee Committee, per Mr Smith—Jubilee Souvenir Booklet, 1882H932; J. M'Gregor Wilkie—three interesting framed photographs; Mrs J. Harraway (Highgate, Dunedin) — photographic copy of address presented to the Marquis of Normanby on the completion of his term as Governor of New Zealand, 1874-1879, by the mayor, councillors, and citizens of Invercargill; William Brookes (Milton)—interesting relic found in the sandhills at the mouth of the Tokoraairiro River. The following deaths were recorded during the month:—Mrs John Airey, Lawrence (86), arrived 1863; James Meehan, Timaru (71), arrived Otago, 1866; Mrs William Barron (nee Banks), Timaru, Melbourne, 1861; Mrs George Featherston (nee Brodrick), Invercargill (75), Bosworth, 1860; William Woods, Dunedin (86), Ethereal, 1864; Miss H. L. Nicol, William street, Dunedin (78). Strathmore. 1856; Mrs D. R. Ruddock, Dunedin (92), arrived Dunedin 1866; Jahez Lyons, Invercargill (91). Robert Henderson, to Bluff, 1862; Miss E. M. Stevens, Dunedin (82), arrived late 1860’s; Mrs E. L. Philpot, Invercargill (74), Sir George Pollock, 1863; Mrs Jessie Steel, West Plains, Invercargill (77). Strathallan, 1858; Miller Robertson, Shiel Hill (74), Silistria, 1860; Magnus Robertson, South bunedin (79), late 1860’s. Mrs Jane Ann Renton (nee Wilson), 59 Fitzroy street, Caversham, who arrived with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Wilson by the ship Dunedin, 1856, was enrolled as an early settler. There were also nine descendants enrolled during the month.
