MILITARY CARNIVAL
SUCCESS OF SECOND- NIGHT Favoured by more settled and “ warmer weather, the military carnival organised by the battery non-commis-sioned officers, was continued at tho Central Battery, St. Kilda, last night, when there was a big attendance of the public. The main attractions were the first of the series of interunit guardmounting, and the interunite tug-of-war, both items being closely watched by the crowd. The guard-mounting competition will continue for two more nights, the results being announced on Thursday night. Only the first round of the tug-of-war contest was decided last evening, the second round being scheduled for to-night. Captain. Freeman - Greene (late Grenadier Guards), Mr W. Lake (late sergeant major, Royal Warwickshire Regiment), and Mr P. R. Chapman (late lieutenant N.Z.E.F.) were the judges of the guard mounting, while Majors S.G. Secular and L. A. Rhodes acted as judges for the tug-of-war, with Lieutenant J. S. Green as starter and Lieutenant G. A. Perry timekeeper. _ 1 , Brisk business was done at the various games erected on the ground.Music was supplied by the Band of tha Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment, under, Lieutenant L. 0. Asten.
The following are the results of tha tug-of-war contest:— : First Round.—A Company (Mosgiel) beat R.N.V.R. No. 1; A Company, Otago Regiment beat R.N.V.R. No. 2 in the second pull; 14th Battery and 12th Batteries, ■■ byes. The draw for to-day is as follows:—i 12th Battery No. 1 v. 14th Battery, Headquarters A Company v. 12tu Battery No. 2, A Company (Mpsgiel)) and A Company, Otago Regiment,; byes. The carnival will continue each night this week. To-night there is to bo a display by the Y.M.C.A, gymnastio squad, and there will be enacted ‘ A Scottish Invasion,’ depicting the first historical record of the 14th Battery in an engagement. The Artillery Band (Southern Command) will he in' attendance.
It is pointed out that when the object of the carnival—the raising of funds to provide for new social rooms, including a kitchen—has been realised the battery n.c.o.s will not be the only ones to benefit by the adjunct. Any. unit training at the battery for a day will be able to receive a hot meal at the conclusion of operations.
