WATER POLO
ST. GLAIR DEFEATS H.M.S. DUNEDIN
In a well-contested game, the St. Clair A team defeated the H.M.S. Dunedin team by 6 goals to 4 at the St. Clair Club hour last night, but with little practice the sailors shaped so well that a .strenuous game is anticipated when they meet the Otago B team at the centre’s carnival next Saturday night. The St. Clair swimmers were quicker in moving up than the sailors, and in this respect the local side had an advantage; but it was not until the second spell that St. Clair showed any marked superiority, and this was largely duo to the excellent combined work of J. Swan and W. J. Jarvis. The sailors goaled twice before St. Clair opened its account, but each side had two goals on at half-time. In the second spell the H.M.S. Dunedin players tired somewhat, and St. Clair added four goals in quick succession. The sailors retaliated hotly in the closing stages, and gave the defence a torrid time, Goldsmith being particularly prominent. Lund, the visitors’ captain, proved himself a reliable halfback, and made several good openings for the front line, while he was a tower of strength on defence. The outstanding player, however, was undoubtedly W. J. Jarvis, who snot three goals, C. Durand, J. Swan, and S. M'Konzie each netting once. For the H.M.S. Dunedin Goldsmith scored three times and Chadwick once. The teams were:—H.M.S. Dunedin: L.S. Collins, A.B. Mullins, A.B. Osborne, L.S. Lund, L.S. Chadwick, A.E. Williams, and A.B. Goldsmith. St. Clair: R. Smith, J. Crowley, C. Durand, J. Swan, W. J. Jarvis, S. M'Kenzie, and I. Turnbull. Sergeant R. J. Upson, of H.M.S. Dunedin, who is an accredited water f)olo referee at Home, gavo an excelent interpretation of the rules, and has been appointed to referee the match between H.M.S. Dunedin and an Otago B team on Saturday night. The match was witnessed, by a large crowd of spectators, who included Captain De Meric and other officers of H.M.S. Dunedin. CLUB COMPETITION DRAW.
