OBITUARY

MRS ANNIE JULIA WHITE % In the estimation of old residents of Anderson’s Day the 'White family was one of the most important in the district, and the announcement of the death yesterday of Airs Annie Julia White, widow of Mr John White, barrister and solicitor, will revive grateful and pleasant memories. Mr White came to Dunedin from Sydney in 1870, served his articles with Mr J antes Anderson, was admitted to the Bar in 1875, and then, though busy in practice, being solicitor to the Otago Hospital Board, the Dempsey Trust, the Tomahawk Hoad Board, etc., and with a good connection as family advisor, he found time to serve the community on the Peninsula County Council, the Hospital Board, the local Hoad Board, and the Gardens Committee. He was also one of the commissioners of the Dunedin Exhibition of 1889-90. He was actively interested, too, in volunteering and rowing. Mr White died in 1904. Airs White was born at Geelong, Victoria, in 1852, the youngest daughter of the Hon. Matthew Holmes, M.L.C. She arrived in the dominion in 1864, and during the whole of her married life resided at Anderson’s Bay, living with her two unmarried daughters since the death, of her husband. For many years Mrs White took a leading part in the social activities of the district. She was a firm and loyal supporter of the Presbyterian Church, and also one of the founders of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union. Early in her life in Dupedin she studied art, and, in association with Air W. M. Hodgkins, one of the finest amateur water-colour painters that Now Zealand could boast of in those days, she made considerable progress, becoming quite an authority on the subject. Another of Airs White’s interests was the Otago Early Settlors’ Association. Often, whilst able to get about, she came into town to visit the office and have a chat about old times. For the last six months she was mostly restricted to her homo, but maintained her mental faculties till the end.

The deceased lady is survived by three sons —Mr John Stuart AVhite, of Leeds, England; the llev. Noil 0. White, of Dargaville; and Mr Charles G. AVhite, of Wellington—and three daughters— Mrs Arthur AV. Every, of Kuala Lumpur ; and the Misses Lois and Mary White, of Anderson’s Bay.
