White to play and win. 32-27, 23-32, 22-26, 20-27, 16-19, 15-24, 26-31 White wins, GAME 15. —Single Corner. — The two following interesting games were played at the Caledonian Draughts Club a. few weeks ago, but unfortunately some of the copy got mixed, and we cannot be sure of the players, so omit the names: —

(a) Generally known as the “ Flora Temple ” line. (b) 16-20 is the usual move here.

(e) Gets away from the book. (d) Forced. (e) Best. (fj Forces 7-11. (g) Secures the draw. (h) 11-16 looks like a loser.

(a) This move is very bad, and gives Black the cut which lie took, known as the “ Old Farmer ” or the “ Goose Walk,” after which White should have no chance. (b) By this move Black has weakened his hold; 8-11 is the move here. (c) Very weak. 6-9 should have been played here. From this point Black’s play is very inferior and invited the defeat he met with. FOR BEGINNERS. [By Request.] This week’s lesson shows how to win with three kings against two, even when each of the latter can reach a separate double corner. The way to win has often puzzled young players, but it is comparatively easy. The following position shows how to force the win;— Black, Ks. 14, 18, 23.

White, Ks. 6, 24. Black to move and win. The win is brought about thus:— 18-15 a 23-27 b 14-10 27-24 10-6 24-19 g 24-28 6-lc 28-32 d l-5e 5-lf B. wins (a) One of thei White kings must now go into the double corner, (b) This is an important move, forcing as it does the remaining king into the other double corner. ' , . (c) For if 28-32, then 15-18 wins for Black. (d) Compulsory, for if 1-5, then 27-24 wins for Black. (e) If 32-28 then 24-19 wins. (f) If 32-28 then 6-10 wins. (g) It will be noticed that Black must forde the exchange of a king, and then he wins with two kings to ono. “ THIRD POSITION." Last week we gave play on “ Second Position”; this week we give what is generally known by all experts as the "'Third Position,” and is credited to Avery;— —Third Position.— Black, 5. Ks. 13, 21.

White, Ks. 14, 22. Black to play and win. The win is brought about thus:—

NOTE. Next Thursday evening, at the Caledonian Club’s Rooms, Y.M.C.A., a match has been arranged between a combined Calc-donian-Tramways team and the Athenaeum team, and we understand there will bo about sixteen or eighteen boards engaged. The Athemeum will be hard nuts to crack.
