UNEMPLOYMENT

HARMED MEN AND THE GAMPS ARCHBISHOP'S VIEW [Pur United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, October 13. “ It was necessary for many married men. as well as single men to face camp life and separation from their families during the war, and men and their families nobly endured it. The present depression is really an extension of the .war period, and we have to try to face the present disabilities as we faced those during the war, but without the ■excitement and glamour.” _ In these .words Archbishop Averill discussed the problem of unemployment camps in his charge to the Anglican Diocesan Synod. “ Nobody wishes to separate married men from their families,” he said, “ but surely it is better as a temporary expedient to give able-bodied men work in the country and work which no man need feel ashamed of doing than to invent jobs .for them in and around the city, ’ many of which are of doubtful value and can well be left to men who are physically unfit for camp life. Genuine unemployed workers, I feel sure, have no desire for unemployment pay arid sustenance without work, and much prefer to retain their self-respect. It is very easy to criticise the Government for its want of vision in facing the tragedy of unemployment, but criticism alone is never very helpful, and probably- the Government knows much more about the problem which it has had to face than most of its critics. It has honestly tried to meet a desperate situation and to make the most and the best of the funds at its disposal.” SCHEME NO. 5 Works Department.—Groups to commence at 8 a.m. to-morrow: — 251—The following men of Group 251 at T. This association is not in opposition to the relief depot, but intends to work in conjunction with it, and try to relieve the strain from those who give all their time and energy to assist the unemployed in Mornington. Mr Napier (secretary of the St. Kilda Unemployed Association) addressed the meeting, and gave a good account of the working of their association. A teniporary committee was formed, consisting of Messrs Middlemiss (chairman), Cleveland (secretary), J. Thompson, W. Sainsbury, C. Stewart, A. Andrews, and A. Roberts. The next meeting will be decided on later, when all the Mornington groups will be notified. The meeting was closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the Mornington Scouts’ Committee for the use of its hall.
