ROWING ASSOCIATION

APPLICATIONS FOR EIGHTS WELLINGTON SUPPORTED Discussion concerning the applications of the Wellington and Marlborough Rowing Associations for the interprovincial eight-oar contest on Easter Saturday took place at a meeting of the Otago Rowing Association last night. It was decided to support Wellington, requesting that another date bo chosen, as Easter Saturday would clash with the Queenstown regatta, which was considered the best fixture of the season. Mr C. R. Caffin presided over the following delegates:—Messrs J. P. Vallis (secretary), S. G. Styche, F. Brough (Otago Club), W. G. Glengarry, P. Vorngreen (North End), W, Robinson, M. T. Budd, S. Whitburn (Macandrew Bay), W. J. Wilson, L. R. Fountain, W. Leftwich (Queen’s Drive), T. F. Mackie, J. E. Colthorpe, AV. Lysaght (Port Chalmers), P. J. Priest, and E. W. Pickford (Oamaru). In advising of its application, the Wellington Association contended that as the course was centrally situated, there was more chance of bigger representation, and that a good “gate” would be assured if the race were rowed at Easter. “ Wellington's course is the most central, but the date will affect us most,” said the Chairman. “We gave way to Marlborough last season, but Idon’t think we can continue to give way. As we have the champion crew, we are entitled to some consideration. The Queenstown regatta cannot be ignored.” Mr Wilson moved—“ That Wellington’s application be supported, but it is the opinion of this association that the date is not only unsuitable, but too late in the season.” He went on to say that the eights would not be rowed until two months after the championship regatta, which was too long to expect oarsmen to keep in training. Delegates to the annual meeting of the N. should make a strong point of that. He did not consider alteration of the date would make any difference to Wellington, where, he thought, a “gate” could be obtained on any Saturday afternoon. Mr Styche (seconding the motion); We can’t stress too strongly that wo met Marlborough last Easter much .against the wish of our oarsmen, who gave up their chances at Queenstown, an old-established fixture, to represent the province. Some other date, not so late in the season, should be chosen. Mr Mackie: We should support Wellington, not because the course is central, but because the race should go round the centres. This is the life of the contest. The motion was carried unanimously. N.Z.A.R.A. ANNUAL MEETING. Mr Caffin was appointed to represent the association at the annual meeting of the N.Z.A.R.A., the order paper of which was discussed at some length. It was decided to support the Canterbury Association’s motion, to be placed before the annual meeting of the N.Z.A.R.A.—“That a Selection Committee of three shall be elected at the annual meeting from nominations called for by the secretary from associations, which must bo received not later than September 30 in each year; provided that if insufficient nominations are received, those so nominated shall be elected and further nominations may be made at the meeting without notice.” On the motion of Mr Brough, it was decided to support the Wanganui Association’s application—the only one—for the championship regatta, to be held in the last week in February. EDMOND SHIELD. The Chairman advised that he and Mr Brough had approached Mr W. F. Edmond, donor of the Edmond Shield, in regard to the suggestion from the Southland Association that the contest for this trophy bo altered from fouroared to eignt-oared. Air Edmond had been quite agreeable, and had asked if it would not bo possible to have both a four-oared and an eight-oared race. It had been pointed out to him that one province might do well in one race and fail in the other, unless special points were allotted. It was decided to advise Southland of the decision, suggesting that a special day bo set aside for this contest, which should not be included in a regatta programme. OARS FOR SALE. Advice was received . from the N.Z.A.R.A. that it had been decided to offer for sale the oars used by the New Zealand crews at Los Angeles. Particulars of the oars (valued at £39 14s) were detailed, and offers wore invited for either the lot (six pairs) or for any number.—The secretary was instructed to advise clubs of the matter, though it was generally felt that the oars would not be suitable for Otago clubs, as they had been made for a boat with rowlocks and not poppets. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr Mackie gave notice of motion—- “ That the words ‘not to include club, interclub, or interprovincial events ’ be added to rule IC.”
