EARLY SETTLERS

ASSOCIATION'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the com mittce of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday afternoon. There were present Messrs J. J. Mallard (in the chair), 10. Webster, W. H. Kerens, J. Hope, E, C. Hazlett, W. Nicolson, James Brown, H. Baron, James Wallace, R. H. Steele, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, J. W. Patton, and A. Eccles. The treasurer’s report was received and accounts were passed for payment. A letter was received from Mr James A. Hamilton, of Thornbury, Southland, asking for a copy of the rules and for general information regarding the management of the Early Settlers’ Association. Their association had been going on for some years, but it was now proposed to extend the scope and build a hall.—The Secretary stated that he had replied giving all the information he could and a copy of the rules. An interesting letter was received from Mr Charles Campbell, of Lower Hutt, Wellington, enclosing an interesting sketch of the old Dunedin Post Office in Jetty street, as it was in 1862, and giving many interesting particulars.

A letter concerning the picture of the ship Deborah (Captain Wing), in which Mr F. Tnckett and others came from Wellington to select a site for Dunedin in 1844, was received. Other interesting matter'was also forwarded. The President said lie had written thanking the writer for his letter. Miss K. M. Wing, on behalf of her self and brothers, offered a iinmbcf of charts of the South Island«prepared by her late grandfather. Captain Thomas Wing, in the early IB4o’s. Tho President said he had replied thanking Miss Wing for the family’s offer, which was much appreciated by the association. Tho following gifts were received and votes of thanks passed to- the givers:— From T. A. Members of the Irvine family (Green Island), portrait of their late parents, Mr and Mrs William Irvine (Mr Irvine, Gloucester, 1858; Mrs Irvine, Resolute, 1866). Captain R, A. Johnston (Queen street), a number of interesting photo groups of various old volunteer companies and individual volunteers. W. H. Ferens, a copy of W. H. Roberts’s booklet, ‘ North Otago Runholders,’ from the early days up to about 1870; jubilee booklet, Cargill Road Methodist Church. 1882-1032. Dr R. S. Orbell (Oamaru), portrait in oils of Mr and Mrs Edward M'Glnshan. Dunedin (Mr M'Glashan arrived 1850, Mrs M’Glashan (nee Bell) 1863.
