The Rev. D. C. Herron, who was nominated, by the Rev. E. J. Tipler and seconded by Dr J. D. Salraond, has been elected a member of the Council of the University of Otago. There were no other nominations.

At the annual meeting of the Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Boat Club last night the members stood in silence as a tribute to the memory of the late Mr W. M'Cormack, who held the position of club rear commodore at the time of his death last year. The death of Mr George Lawrence was referred to with regret at last night’s meeting of the City Council, the mayor (Mr R. S. Black) stating that the city had lost a man who had left a good infiuence throughout the community. Mr Lawrence had occupied the mayoral chair during the 1906-07 period. Always he had been straight, conscientious, and practical, and always he was full of sympathy for those in need. As a mark of respect to the memory of Mr Lawrence the council stood in silence for a few moments.

Mr J. L. Salmond left this morning for Wellington to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Art Societies’ Association.

Mr A. G. Justice was a passenger for Wellington by this morning’s mail train.

Dr E. F. Thomson, of Christchurch, and his wife are at present revisiting Dunedin.

A Press Association cable message from London states that Jacqueline, a daughter of Mr David Nathan, of Auckland, was married to Arthur, a son of the late Captain Robert Sebag-Monte-fiore, a nephew of Lord Bearsted. There was a brilliant ceremony at the Bayswater Synagogue. The latest guests to register at the Grand Hotel are Mr S. E. Marler (Auckland), Messrs A. H. Tartakover and A. W. Keyes (Wellington), Mr and Mrs D. Y. Donaldson, Messrs G. Skellerup, C. J. Ferrier, H. Margolish, S. Teal, and F. Marshall (Christchurch), and Messrs D. L. Patterson and W. H. Turvey (Oamaru). Staying at the City Hotel are Mr C. Hughes (Wellington), Mr S. David (Christchurch), Miss K. Kilgour (Greymouth), Mr J. Rooney (Temuka), Miss D. Chewings (Mossburn), and Mr J. N. Cobb (Oamaru).
