PLANT NEEDED IN CENTRAL OTAGO USE OF UNEMPLOYMENT FUND SUGGESTED [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 28. Reference to the necessity for up-to-date plant if gold was to be obtained from Central Otago in considerable quantity was made by Mr Jlodkiu when speaking in the course of the Addrcss-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives. Mr Bodkin said the men subsidised out of the Unemployment Fund wore getting gold in small quantities, but he thought better results could bo obtained if the men had some capital behind them. It would be a step in the right direction if, instead of being used as a subsidy, the money from tho Unemployment Fund was devoted to the purchase of plant. There wore areas in Tapanui, Naseby, St. Balkans, and Cambrian, for instance, where there might not be sufficiently bright prospects to attract the investment of private money with the object of securing dividends, but if there could be some form of State assistance he felt confident that a large number of men could be permanently taken off the labour market and could become contributors to the national prosperity.
