MANCHESTER UNITY

The' largest gathering of Oddfellows assembled' at Loyal Milton Lodge room for Homo time greeted the opening of the Past Grands’ meeting on Monday evolving.- The function was entirely controlled by P.G.s of the lodge, who :are to be complimented on the success of the evening. The chairs were occupied by the following officers;—N.G. Pro. W. Kirby, V.G. Pro. L. H. Lilburne, G.M. Pro. It. H. Paird, E.S. Pro. F. T. Marryatt, Warden Pro. W. H. Wells, Guardian Pro. S. D. Corston, Conductor Pro. G. P. M'Gregor. ; 'Apologies for non-attendance were re,.ceived from P.G.s Pros. A. W. Good i(Waimatc) and J. I!. Paul (Lawrence). . During the meeting sympathetic reference was made to the recent death of , Pro. David Paterson, who was a foundation. member of the lodge, and members stood in silence as a tribute to his memory. Three candidates were presented for initiation, and the impressive manner in which the P.G.s carried out the ceremony showed clearly that time had not affected their knowledge of the ritual. Opportunity was taken by P.G. Pro. Kirby to refer to matters in connection with the Loyal .Toko Juvenile Lodge, and he paid a 1 tribute to the services rendered to the ■boys’ lodge by P.G. Pro. Lllburne. A comprehensive review of the working of the lodge since its formation was '•then submitted. The toast of visiting brethren was responded to bv N.G. Pro. H. Mitchell (Loyal Dalton ), N.G. Sister M. Williamson (Loyal Victoria), and Pro. W. P. Prowu (Loyal Nasoby ,Lodge). At the conclusion of business an excellent programme of vocal and ••instrumental items was submitted. -The lodge is,fortunate in possessing an .orchestra and a choir. At the supper adjournment the N.G. (Pro. G. Melville) paid a well-deserved tribute to P.G. Pro. W. Kirby and the various • performers. The fine programme had been greatly appreciated, and disclosed the lodge to possess some talented artists. The hall was then cleared for dancing, the lodge orchestra supplying the music and the duties of M.C. being capably discharged by Pro. 11. J. Cockefill.

Tho fortnightly meeting of Loyal Albion Lodge, held on Thursday evening, drew a good muster of members and visiting brethren, N.G. Pro. „G. Potts in the chair, One candidate was initiated. The P.C. See rotary wrote ad-

1 vising that the sum of £lO had been granted from the distress fund for a necessitous case, for which representations had been made to the district executive. The sum of £2 was donated to the mayoress’s fund for Christmas cheer. Under the quarterly summoned meeting consideration was given to the panel system as suggested by the Otago branch of the Pritish Medical Association. P.P.G.M. Pro. P. Stabb, as one of the delegates to the conference of friendly societies and representatives of the P.M.A., outlined the principles of the system, after which a general discussion ensued. A majority of the speakers seemed to be against any change in the lodge’s medical system, and on a vote being taken it was resolved—“ That this lodge does not favour the proposed panel system.” The secretary was instructed to forward the resolution to the Friendly Societies’ Council. It was also recommended to the council that when vacancies occur for lodge medical officers the positions should bo advertised before being filled. It was pointed out that some lodges had followed the practice of appointing medical officers without advertising such vacancies. It was decided to invito the members of the Friendly Societies’ Council to be present at the anniversary of the lodge on October 20. The N.G. announced that members of the juvenile lodges would be entertained next lodge night. An invitation was received to a Indies’ evening at the Loyal Dunedin Lodge on Thursday evening. During the meeting the N.G. extended a warm welcome to two old members, P.G.s Pros, W. Davie and D. Yates. The Loyal Centenary Lodge met in the Wesley Street Hall, the N.G., Pro. Russell, presiding. There was a good attendance of members, and sister lodges were also well represented. The principal business was the election of delegates, the N.G. and P.G. Pro. Harrison being appointed. A debate with the Loyal Valley Lodge has been arranged for next lodge night, and P.G. Pro. Heartstongo was deputed to select the team to represent Centenary Lodge. “ Trustees' night ” was the syllabus for the evening, and members ’ and visitors took part in a progressive euchre tournament. Prizes donated by the trustees were won by P. Sec. Pro. Roscvear (first) and Pro. Harrison (booby). Members were later entertained to supper, and before closing the lodge appreciative reference was made to the hosts of the evening, a hearty vote of thanks being carried by acclamation. The Loyal Cavcrsham Lodge held its fortnightly meeting in the M.U. Hall, Forbury Corner. There was a largo muster of members, presided over by N.G. Pro. Ksplin. Two nominations for membership were received. It was resolved to entertain combined juveniles at the next meeting, ami arrangements for this wore loft to a comunttee. After the close of business a debate was held with a team from Loyal Valley Lodge* on the subject 1 Town Life Versus Country Life,’ Valley taking the former and Cavorsham the latter. P.P.G.M. Pro. K. Longworth acted as judge, Cavcrsham gaining the verdict.
