HOUSE SURGEONS’ RESIGNATIONS

DISCUSSION BY HOSPITAL BOARD [Pee United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 28. The practice of house surgeons in resigning at short notice was the subject of discussion at to-day’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. In a letter to the board, dated to-day, Dr William Rothwell said: “I desire to tender my resignation as house surgeon to the board, and I will bo obliged if this is accepted for the end of this month. I regret that I am quite unable to offer a more formal notification.” “ There have been three or four similar resignations recently,” said the secretary (Mr W. S. Wharton). “ Apparently we have no redress.” The Chairman (Mr H. J. Otley) said that it ivas most unsatisfactory. The work of the Hospital had to be carried on, and the medical superintendent was left short staffed. Similar trouble had been experienced in_ Wellington. “ These young men decline to sign a contract,” continued Mr Otley. “ They ought to give a month’s notice.”

The resignation was referred to th« sub-committee with power to act.
