DUNEDIN SWIMMING CLUB

PAST SEASON REVIEWED A highly successful season was re- ; viewed in the annual report of the | Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club, to i he presented to the annual meeting in ! the Otago Motor Club rooms on Octo- | her 5. The report states: The committee has to record a season of exceptional activity. This satisfactory state of affairs was mainly brought about by the early start in competitive swimming, commencing with the “ Learn to Swim Week ” held early in the season. During the season there was a. considerable increase in new members, due to the energy shown by various members. A number of these were learners on joining, and performed creditably in Competition before the season closed. The financial membership is: Senior men 36, senior ladies 31, boys 71, girls 56; total, 194. , Following its usual practice, the club held the first iuterclub carnival of the season, and although not as successful financially j as in former years, the swimming and (living were of a very high standard. I The lack of attendance by the public is ! accounted for by the fact of the Gene- [ nil Elections being held the previous day. The City Council again kindly granted the use of the Tepid Baths for club practice on Friday and Saturday evenings from 8.45 to 9.45. Friday nights were successfully devoted to the teaching and training of the juniors, and in this connection the thanks of the committee are extended to those members who gave their valuable assistance .on these evenings. Saturday nights were mostly taken up for general training among competitive swimmers and water polo players. Early in the season a great deal of enthusiasm was displayed by a, number of our members, and on Saturday evenings serious practice was indulged in under sytematic coaching, with the result that the club’s A team, after a very strenuous competition for the Stuart Banner, played throughout the season without losing a match. Their record was: Played 5, won 5, lost 0; goals for 46, goals against 9. As usual, the competitions for the J. J. Clark and W. F. James Cups created a great deal of interest and riioro numerous entries were received than in previous years. The, club championship (J. J. Clark Cup) was won by W. J. Jarvis, with J. O. Byrnes rmmer-up. The junior handicap (W. F. James Cup) was won by J. D. O’Driscoll for the second time in succession, with Miss G. Rix second. During the season interesting competitions were held for trophies donated by Air D. Thomson and Mr J. H. Jarvis, K. Leckie winning the former, and W. Williams being successful with the latter. Both of these boys showed marked improvement during the year, K. Leckie: being unable to swim at the beginning of the season. The Batt Cup Race was held under the most trying conditions, but Air V. Nowall, from" the scratch mark, gained second place, as well as making fastest time, for the second year in succession. J. D. O’Driscoll also put up a good performance.

The second annual race for the James Harbour Cup was held on Afarch 19, in conjunction with the Ravensbounie regatta. The . weather was perfect, and twelve swimmers started, seven of whom completed the course. Aliss AI. B. Alathieson was the winner, with T. Pullar second, and V.
