COALITION SPLIT UNLIKELY

RECALCITRANTS TOO FEW THE VfITE IS THE ACID TEST [From Ouu Parliamentary Kepokter.] WKLUXGTOX, September 26. Experienced back-benchers in fj IL ' Coalition Party scout the idea that the development of a real cave within the Government's ranks is a possibility tins session. The view generally held is that, while there may be one or two members who iind themselves forced into a position of independence or ot open detiance to Cabinet’s policy there would not bo a sufficient number ol recalcitrants to make a serious breakaway movement feasible. Discussing the outlook to-night, one prominent Coalitionist who has not always followed his party into the lobby said that as far as lie could see the hie of the Government for the full term was not likely to be imperilled now that the need for the passage of emergency legislation had passed. No doubt there woidd be the usual difference ol opinion—that happened in the best regulated families—but lie felt that the Government woidd be assured ot a substantial majority on all its legislation. Another member said it was absurd to talk of breakaway movements. "With some supporters who found themselves at variance with the Government policy it was a case of being all there for the hundred yards in the lobbies. There would be talk of rebellion, but when it came to the vote —the acid test —the promised support was not forthcoming. The attitude adopted by Mr Samuel has aroused unusual interest in political circles, and .the next move—if there is to be one —is being awaited with interest. Mr Forbes has declined to reply to the latest statement of the member for Thames, and it is assumed that the subject will next be beard of in the House when Mr Samuel speaks on jthe Address-in-Reply.
