TUG-OF-WAR CONTEST For some months past the Catholics of Alosgiel have been preparing for a two days’, bazaar, which commenced last night. " Euchre parties and social,evenings have beeu held regularly in aid of one or other of the stalls, and all this combined to work up interest. Then a tug-of-war was announced, and this was an additional transaction, aild Some eight teams arranged to try conclusions. The hall was neatly decorated, and the stalls were well filled. The mayor (Mr W. E. AFLoau) performed the opening ceremony, and llev. Father AFMahoii thanked the townspeople for their patronage and all who had helped. The stalls were presided over by ladies of the congregation, while the young men controlled the side shows and other attractions. ■ Mr B. A. Qnelch made an efficient secretary. The Taieri Highland Pipe Band gave items. The tug-of-war proved ’ a great attraction, and the first pulls .were put through last night. The stalls were presided oVer as follow: —Jumble stall: Mesdnmes F. A. Clieyne and AY. Bevis and assistants. Produce stall: Mrs-P.'-Cunningham and Miss AFGettigan .and, assistants. Tea rooms, cake stalls, etc.: Mrs A. F. Qulcch and assistants. , The Mayor declared the bazaar open in an appropriate speech. He was introduced by the Rev. Father M'Halion, who said it was with a sense of gratitude and pleasure that he welcomed the mayor (Mr AV. E. M‘Lean), who had attended at no little' inconvenience to himself. The speaker commented on the fact that Mr M‘Lcan had always been anxious to attend to his civic duties, and these he carried out graciously and with pleasure. (Applause.) Mr M'Lean thanked Father M‘-Mahon for the flattering reception accorded him. It gave him - pleasure to attend and witness the excellent display, which spoke volumes for the labours and enthusiasm of those responsible. It must be gratifying to them to witness such a large gathering at 1 their bazaar. He wished them every success, and formally declared the bazaar open. It is many years since a tug-of-war competition "has been held in Mosgiel. and- it created great excitement. Eight teams entered, and there were eight pulls last night. The.draw was as follows ; _Weeping Willows v. Ace, Railways v. Sein Poiriers, Rovers.v. Chocolate Soldiers, Willows y.-Invincibles. Mr James Cuiren ' acted as referee, Messrs J. Carroll and J.-' Cunningham nidges, Mr E. Cunningham timekeeper, and Mr E. J. Doogiie steward'. Credit is due to the officials for the careful handling of the .contest, the details of which are as follow; In the first pull Weeping Willows beat Ace. The losers-had the advantage at the start, -but in , the second minute of" the three" Weeping Willows gained the advantage and held it to the finish, and won by Tin. Mr W. H. Holland captained the winners and Mr R. Pearce the Ace team. Ju the second pull Railways beat Sinn Feiners bv 7in. Railways got the pull at the start in two lifts,- and held the light till the’ finish. E. J. Ball captained the winners and \A . L.- Holland the losers. In the third pull Rovers beat Chocolate Soldiers. The pull broke even, and Chocolate Soldiers had the advantage for the first minute, but in the last half-minute the Rovers took a quarter of an inch and held that to the finish. Mr W. Couglilan captained the winners and Air S. M’Millan the losers. The fourth pull was between Willows and Invincibles, .the former winning Willows had the advantage at the start. Invincibles took it from them at one and a-half minutes.. From then on Willows gradually led, winning by 2)m. Mr E. Jacobson captained the winning team and Air George Couglilan the losers. . . After a brief spell ..the winners ol A pulled the winners of B, and the- winners of C pulled the winners of D. Likewise the losers of A and C pulled B and D respectively. Railways beat Weeping Willows by Tin. The winners had the advantage all through. The second pull of this round ivas between the Willows and Rovers. The Willows had the advantage- at the -beginning, and hung there for two minutes. Rovers took it back to' within'half an inch of centre, and Willows regained and finished with Jin to the : good. The third pull took..place between Chocolate Soldiers and Invincibles. The winners lind start; and held this right through, adding another inch'.at “ time.” The last pull of the evening was between Ace and Sinri Feiners. Ace were the victors. Sinn Feiners had the advantage for the first half-mmute. and then Ace took control and held till the finish with Jiin. The contest, for tonight will be conlmenced with Rovers v. Railway, to be followed by the Willows and" AVeeping AVjllows.
