USEFUL UNEMPLOYMENT WORKS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—-The letter appearing in your issue of the 25th, under this heading, made interesting reading, more especially the writer’s mention of that muchneeded road over the Haast Pass into
tiie western district of Otago. It is gratifying to uoto a general awakening to the fact that communication to the west is long overdue, and that this particular road should have taken precedence over many of the “ joy ” motor roads that have been constructed in recent years. When it is realised that it is an admitted fact that there are hundreds of thousands of acres of some of the best cattle land in the dominion in that area, that most of it is Crown land, that most of it is quite unsettled and waiting to be used, one wonders why this area has .so long been neglected. This area of South Westland and Western Otago abounds in mineral wealth, as well as possessing cultivatable lands, and its scenic charms are second to none. The trade outlet of this area to the west is undoubtedly the railhead at Cromwell, and when this road is completed it will unquestionably be found that the tourist traffic and business will go hand in hand, so to speak, over the Haast, which is tho lowest pass of the Southern Alps and snow free.—l am, etc., Otago. August 29.
