WRESTLING
OTAGO ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Otago Wrestling Association was held on Saturday evening, when the president (Mr C. L. Piner) presided. The New Zealand Union wrote stating that, owing to the economic conditions, it was necessary for a general reduction in the costs- in connection with the staging of bouts, otherwise the wrestlers would find their visits of very doubtful value. The chairman stated that, according to the expenses of the northern associations, the local association’s expenses were very moderate, and every care would be exercised to keep the expenses at a minimum in view of the fact that admission charges were the lowest in New Zealand. The association had also to consider that the general welfare of the professional wrestling, together with its ability to attract and hold good men, more than ever depended upon the exorcise of the greatest care in aiming at box office results. A new scale of admission charges was submitted by the treasurer, and it was agreed to try those for the first contest. The union further advised that the Government had amended the Police Offences Act, permitting wrestling contests to be hold in a ring not loss than 18ft square and up to 24ft square. The Match Committee reported that Harry Mamos (the “ Grunting Greek ”) had been secured for the opening match with Tommy Thompson for September 3 at the Town Hall.— Approved. The following appointments were made : —Referee for the professional contest, Mr W. Goughian; referee for the amateur contests, Mr W. Anderson; scale steward, Mr A. Clark; timekeeper, Mr T. M'Cracken. The Chairman reported that he had arranged four amateur preliminaries and a°suitable programme.
