COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS

ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT The country members of the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association of Otago held their annual smoke concert in the clubrooms on Saturday evening. There was a largo attendance, and the president of : the club (Mr D. Gain), in welcoming the guests, expressed the hope that they would all have a good time. Mr H. Russell proposed the toast of “ The Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association.” In doing so ho expressed admiration of the pliilanthropic work of the club, and said that it was an organisation ot which all its members should be proud. It was a great asset to its members, and it promoted social intercourse to the general benefit. Mr J. Gillan, in responding, said that no other organisation in this city had greater opportunities for philanthropic work, and it had seined those opportunities. It had also helped its members who were in need of assistnaco. The speaker enumerated _ the many benefits that members received, and spoke of the good work the club s choir had done in the past, mentioning that during the eight years ithad been in existence it had raised £2,000 for charity. ’ , The toast of “ The Orphans Club was proposed by Mr D. Gam and responded to by Mr Alex. Sligo. _ An excellent programme of musical and elocutionary items was provided bv members of the. Dunedin Orphans Club, those contributing being Messrs S Tavlor, A. N. Watson, A. Regan, It. Duerden, W. Ruffell, A/ I Sligo, A. Clapp, S. G. Angell, and G. Mearns (songs), H. Russell (recitations). W. Le Gal (violin), C. Gibbons (flute), A. Regan and A. N. Watson, and D. French and C. Hill (sketches). Mr A. Frost played the accompaniments.
