RUGBY OJ.F.U. COMMITTEE The Management Committee of the Rugby Union met last night, Mr S. G. Styche (president) in the chair. AUCKLAND v. OTAGO. It was decided, on the suggestion of Mr Cavanagh, that the AucklandOtftgo match on Wednesday, August 10, oe commenced at 3.15 to allow as many as possible to see the game. GATE TAKINGS. . The Secretary reported that the gate takings at the Otago-Canterbury fame on; Saturday amounted to £520 2s 3d. THE BENEFIT MATCH. The Canterbury Union forwarded £5 6s towards the Duncan-Eckhold benefit match. PAYNE TROPHY MATCH. The Canterbury Union wrote asking if the Payne Trophy match (between the premier teams of Dunedin and of Christchurch) could be played on August 27 instead of September 17. — The Chairman said that August 27 was set down for the annual charity match, and that it might not be advisable to hold it later, as interest might then be waning somewhat.—lt was decided to inform Canterbury that, it was regretted tho alteration could not be made, as Saturday, August 27, had already been set down for the annual charity match. REPLACEMENTS WANTED. It was decided to support the movement of the. Canterbury Rugby Union to have consideration given to the question of teams leaving the ground at half-time at the meeting of delegates to be called by the New Zealand Rugby Union to go into the question of non-replacement of players. In the course of discussion Mr D. C. Jolly said that in the junior rep. match at Carisbrqok on Saturday a player had complained at half-time of feeling unwell. However, he had played on in the second half, and on returning home after the match he had to be put to bed and a doctor called, it being found that be had concussion which necessitated his removal to the hospital. This was another example of the danger of not allowing replacements. There was some discussion regarding the time that replacements should be allowed in a match, and it was decided to inform Canterbury that the committee was in favour of replacements being made at any period of the game instead of only up to twenty minutes after the start of the second spell, as suggested by Canterbury. The meeting ,of . delegates will take place at Wellington on August 18. RULINGS FROM N.Z. UNION. The Secretary of the New Zealand Union wrote stating that it was considered the ball was fairly out of a 3-4-1 scrummage when it had passed the feet of the second row of forwards. Mr A. J. Haub (representing the Otago Referees’ Association) said his association had never v received that ruling. Mr T. O’Shea; I think we should ask them what constitutes a scrum. Mr Haub said that other rulings which they sometimes saw in the papers were never received by the local Referees’ Association. It was decided to request the New Zealand Union to send the Otago Union a copy of all rulings given in accordance with the laws of the game, and to advise that the Otago Referees’ Association had not received a copy of the ruling referred ,to above. _ Following some dlsciissibh raised by Mr O'Shea on what a scrum, it was decided to ask the New Zealand Union for a detailed explanation of the ruling. BISHOPSCOURT GROUND.

Permission was granted to M'Glashan College to play the annual match with St. Andrew's College (Christchurch) at Bishopscourt No. 2 ground on Wednesday. It was also decided to write to the' Kaikorai Ground Company asking them to look into the condition of the’ drains at Bishopscourt, it having been stated that some of them were blocked. A SOUTHLAND REQUEST.

The Southland Union wrote asking if arrangements could be made for the ’Varsity team to visit Invercargill to play Pirates on September 10.—It was decided to reply stating that on September 10 the Otago-Wellington match would be played and on September 17 the Charity Saturday match, and that September 24 would be the only Saturday available. SCHOOLS’ REP. TEAMS.

After considerable discussion, Mr Jolly gave notice of his intention to move at the next meeting that the motion providing that only one primary schools’ rep. team be sent to Invercargill instead of two be rescinded.

It was made clear,’ in the course of discussion on a letter from the teachers, that the majority of members favoured the sending of two teams this year, because the invitation for two

Lad come from Southland, but that in future there should be only one team. The local teachers intimated that they also held this view. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Senior Grade.—Southern v.
