DIVINING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Some of the everyday things which cun bo done with the divining rod, and which can be taught to all those thousands of people in every country who are sensitive to this thing, are as follow:—(1) By going over a case of apples it can be stated if all are sound. (2) By going over a truck of potatoes it can be stated (a) if the potatoes are a good dry cooking potato or a wet sloppy one, and (b) whether there are rotten potatoes in the truck. (3) In the Customs shed it would be possible to detect other things than the declared contents. (4) It is not necessary to go blind-stabbing for gold or other minerals, as all can be located, depth given, approximate value of the find stated, and if reefs or coal, the line given and breaks, if any, marked off, and the spot stated where it takes up again. These are some of the things which can be done, and of which proof can be shown right here, close to our city. The Minister of Mines has been advised of these things, and it is for the unemployed people of Dunedin and New Zealand to say what shall be done about it. Further than that, the labourer is worthy of his hire. I personally am not looking for big financial results. The “ diviner’s ” job is to find only; after that it is Capital and Labour’s job to develop. Having stated all this, one must throw one’s thoughts forward and imagine the deadly opposition that will he exercised in some quarters; but “ cheerio ” when you know you are right and the people’s need is great. Why worry?—l am, etc., Geo. Livingston. August 1.
