BAY VIEW ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It is indeed gratifying to know that our mayor is trying to raise the citizens of Dunedin from their past apathy and urging them to fight for their rights, and I think it is quite time to urge the ratepayers to do likewise. It is bad enough having a pond in the centre of our city, but I know of ratepayers who have a pond at their front gate, and in spite of promises from the council have waded through it for the last ten years. I am referring to a portion of Bay View road. Last week some friends and I were invited to spend an evening in that locality. Our host, knowing the state of the road and footpath, kindly called for us with a car. On leaving the house two of the party started to walk round the car when they found themselves with waiter over their ankles. Both have been confined to bed since with severe colds. Last Christmas a ,lady from Palmerston North was visiting the same house, and when trying to negotiate what should be the footpath she fell and badly hurt both knees. Surely if the council cannot afford to make proper paths it might hang kerosene lamps on the fences to save pedestrians from danger. Trusting the citizens and ratepayers will wake up and fight their hardest for what is just and reasonable.—l am. etc., L.M.A. August 1.
