SATURDAY, JUNE 25. (Before Mr J. E. Bartholomew, S.M.)' DRUNKENNESS. Two first offenders were each fined lOi, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. An old man, Cornelius o‘Donoghue, a statutory first offender, was convicted amj discharged. NEGLIGENT DRIVING. Robert Septimus Hawley pleaded guilty to charges of negligently driving a motor, car and of driving without a liaense. Sub-inspector Cameron said the defen. dant was an orchardist from Alexandra, and had bten attending the hospital for some little time. About 8.30 p.m. he wa« driving down Moray place by the Savoy, and when turning south he cut the corner and collided with a south-bound tramcar* Ho was then on the wrong side of the road* His excuse for not renewing his license was that he was not able to do so until he returned to Alexandra. On the charge of negligent driving a fine of 20s and costs was imposed, and on the other charge ho was fined 10s and costs. SUSPENSION SHORTENED. Ivan Robert Prescott, who on February 22 last was convicted of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car, and win* was prohibited from driving for six months, applied to have the balance of hie suspension waived. Sub-inspector Cameron said that Prescott had given the police no trouble since his arrest. Ho was a salesman, and had had to engage someone to drivo the car for him. The Magistrate said that Prescott had had his lesson, and, in view of the favourable police report and the present economic depression, he would waive the balance of the suspension.
