ELECTORAL BREACH
COMMUNIST CANDIDATE FINED [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, June 24. A breach of the Electoral Act of 1927* in that lie failed to supply the return, jug officer with an account of all pay. inents made in connection with a par. liamcntarv election contest, was ad. mitted on behalf of Janies Henry Edwards, aged forty, before Mr F. K* Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to : day. Edwards was an unsuccessful candidate in the Communist interests for th« Auckland Central seat at the election last December. Counsel said that Edwards had left the return of his balance-sheet to his organiser, who admitted that he was to blame. Detective-sergeant Kelly, who prosecuted. said the maximum penalty for the offence was £2O. Edwards had been written to twice by the returning offi. cer, but the letters had been ignored. Counsel' for Edwards said he did not think there bad been a prosecution of this kind before in Auckland. He understood that the case liad been brought ns a warning. The magistrate imposed a fine oi £- 10s,' with costs.
