PHILHARMONIC CONCERT

The above society’s concert this year will be held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Tuesday, July 5, when a very interesting programme will be presented, opening with the ‘ Marche Tzigane,’ by' Lacome. This will bo followed by; the overture to the opera ‘1 Promessi Sposi,’ by Ponchielli. This delightful overture is based chiefly on themes which occur in the opera. This will be followed by ‘ A Lament ’ from Keltic suite by Foulds, the ’cello solo being played, by Air P. Palmer. This Keltic suite is an original composition by J. H. Foulds, and the melodies are entirely his own, but on Scottish styde. The lament is first played by tho solo ’cello, accompanied by the harp, then the whole orchestra takes it up and makes it a glorious number. This is bracketed with the characteristic piece ‘ Rustle of Spring,’ by Binding, which makes a delightful contrast to the lament, and is descriptive of a light breeze passing through the leaves in spring, and the composer is most ably successful in describing it. The first part of the programme will conclude with ‘ Dance Macabre ’ (‘ Dance of Death’), by Saint-Saens. This composition was most favourably received when performed by the society on a previous occasion. The work is suggested by' a poem of Henri, Cazalis. The hour of midnight is heal'd to strike, and Death is supposed to perform a weird and ghastly dance, which grows wilder and wilder until tho break of dawn, when the excitement gradually subsides and quiet reigns once more. This number is being repeated- on this occasion by special request. Tho second part of the programme will open with 1 Spring SyTmphony, No. 2, in D Major,’ by Brahms, the third movement only being played. This will be followed by Hungarian dance, ‘ Czardas, No. I,’ by Mozetti The ‘ Czardas ' is a national Hungarian dance which affords plenty of scope for the imagination of a composer, and is a bright, melodious composition. The programme will conclude with 1 Dance of the Hours,’ from the opera by Ponchielli, this being one of the important numbers in this opera. The vocalists for this concert will be Miss Thelma Panic and Mr S. Kershaw. The box plan will open at The Bristol on 1 riday' next, and 2s 6d tickets will be obtainable at the door.
