MOTHERS’ UNION
LADY ALIGE FERGUSSON AT DUMFRIES Lady Alice Fergusson was the principal speaker at the annual conference of the Dumfries-shire branches of the Scottish Mothers’ Union. Mrs Carruthcrs, who occupied the chair, introduced Lady Alice I'ergnsson who. she said, was county president of the Mothers’ Union for Mouth Ayrshire. But much more interesting and important than thaL when her husband was Governor-General of New Zealand, she started a society called the League of Mothers in New Zealand. That society was affiliated to the Scottish Mothers’ Union, and was conducted on the same lines. One of their branches in Dumfries-shire. An nan, had already formed a link with a branch of the'Lcague of Mothers in New Zealand, and she hoped that cthe" branches would also form links. Lady Alice gave a very interesting account of the work of the League ot Mothers in New Zealand, and spoke ol branches which had been formed under special difficulties in the earthquake districts in the dominion, amongst the wives of lighthouse keepers, and amongst the Maoris. The branch formed for the wives of lighthouse keepers was conducted by correspondence, and a lady with special gifts for such work wrote letters to the members giving advice about imparting religious instruction to tile children and dealing with the various problems with which they were faced. Ladv Alice spoke of the enormous potentialities for good of the Mothers’ Union, appealed to the members to carry out the ideals set before them, and'in their daily lives to be themselves what they wished their families to ho.
