A luncheon party was given in the Otago Women’s Club on Friday, the guests of honour being the Dean and Mrs Cruickshanks, others present being Mr and Mrs F. M. Oldham, Mr and Mrs H. S. Fenwick. Mrs H. E. Abraham, and Mrs J, W. Black.

The committee members of_ the St. Dominic’s Ex-pupils’ Association lias completed the final arrangements for the association’s first “Back to School” evening, and lias fittingly chosen to hold it at the Alma Mater. A varied and entertaining programme, including minstrels, charades, etc., has been arranged, and members are looking forward to a delightful informal evening. A delightful kitchen evening was given on June 16 at the residence of Sirs J. Robson, Mornington, when the girl friends of Miss Mona Vivian met to convey their best wishes for her future, and the bride-to-be was the recipient of many useful gifts.

A very enjoyable afternoon was spent at tho' Vedic on Wednesday, when friends met to say farewell to Mrs Alex. M'Donald, who is leaving Dunedin shortly to take up her residence in Wellington. Tho ladies of the Leith Bowling Club were the guests of their retiring president (Mrs Knowles) at an afternoon in the Tudor Hall on Tuesday. After an enjoyable afternoon tea had been partaken of the members adjourned to the lounge, where a pleasant hour was spent in social intercourse. Mrs E. Lawsou proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Knowles for the enjoyable afternoon, which was carried by acclamation.

The annual meeting of the Kaituna Ladies’ Bowling Club was held on Monday, June 20, at the Vedic Tea Rooms. There, was a large attendance of members, the president (Mrs Ripley) being in the chair. After the members had been entertained at afternoon tea by tho president, the secretary (Mrs Bcntield) read the annual report and balancesheet. This having been adopted, a heartv vote of thanks was passed to the retiring president and secretary for the very able manner in which they had discharged their duties. " Tho following are the office-bearers for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs Miller; vice-pre-sident, Mrs Benfield; secretary, bliss Cooper; members of committee—Mesdames Justice, Cameron, M'Millan, Jeffrey, and Ripley.

On Wednesday the Literary Circle of the Otago Women’s Club entertained Dr Marshall Macdonald at a luncheon party in the club rooms. Lady Ferguson, "who presided, introduced the guest of honour, and expressed her regrets on behalf of the club that Dr Macdonald was leaving Dunedin. Mrs Galwav, chairwoman of the Literary Circle, in endorsing Lady Ferguson’s remarks, explained how deeply indebted the circle was to Dr Macdonald for the aid he had so frequently given in literary matters, and wished him well in his new sphere of activities. Dr Macdonald, in replying, paid high tribute to both the Otago Women’s Club and the Literary Circle, describing the former as the best-run club in the city, and the latter as being especially praiseworthy iu its ideals of keeping tho club members in touch with tho best literature. His remarks, in which fvoro included reference to Rudyard Kipling and Robert Louis Stevenson, both of whom had been visitors to Dunedin when he was a boy, and accounts of his meeting with various literary men during tho war, brought to a close a happy function. Among other guests present were Mesdames R. Gilkison, Battersby, Aslin, Hervey, Wakefield Holmes, R. Ewing, Tyson, Porteous, Cowie, R. D. Nimmo, Carr, Fergus, Melville, James Begg, Laurenson, W. J. Williams, Rodgerson, Misses M‘Bengali, Ross, Jackson, Aslin, Crow, Farnic, Rule, Ritchie, Service, Gilkison and Nicolson.

The Dunedin League of Mothers met iu the Assembly Hall. Y.M.C.A., on Thursday afternoon, when Mrs W. A. Ross presided. The meeting opened with tho league hymn and prayer, the aims and objects of the league, and the Lord’s Prayer, bliss Grace Mackintosh was the speaker, the title of her address being: ‘ The Things That Belong to Our Peace.’ Enumerating them under the headings, (1) Love, (2) Friendship, (3) Delight of Literature, (4) Music, (5) Solace and Loveliness of Nature, (61 Faith, she mentioned and quoted from tho following:—l Corinthians, 13, Christina Rossetti, and Wordsworth. Mrs John Reid, on behalf of members, thanked Miss Mackintosh for her timely and inspiring address. During the afternoon Miss Sinclair played two violin solos. Mrs August De Beer acting as accompanist. The serving of afternoon tea concluded a very pleasant gathering. Next month Dr Thomson will address members on ‘ Our Own Hospital.’

A surprise party of young lady friends of Mr Albert Murray visited the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs D. Murray, Signal Hill road, Opoho, on Monday night, when Mr Murray was entertaining friends at his twenty-first birthday celebration. Immediately a change of programme was made, and the drawing room was cleared for dancing. .During supper Mr Murray proposed the health of his son. Those present were: Misses M. Clements, B. Last Saturday evening the Otago High School Old Boys’ Cricket Club held another enjoyable dance at the Gardens tea kiosk. Mr W. R. Brinsley, in a short speech, expressed the club’s regret at the absence through illness of Mr J. A. Smith, who has been mainly responsible for the club dances. One of the features of the evening was the lucky spot dance, which was won by Mr J. Gascoigne and Miss H. Johnston. The club is indebted to Messrs W. Woods and G. Edgar for playing extras, which were heartily applauded, and to Messrs J. A. Smith, N. Cherry, W. R. Brinsley, and James Wilson for carrying out the arrangements and making the dance a success. The roll call was responded to by a humorous reading which created much amusement. _ The Young Women’s Institute was invited to attend, and Miss Chisholm, from the home science department, gave a comprehensive demonstration on home dressmaking. All present were keenly interested, and many useful _ hints were given. The Social Committee asked each member to bring a question. When the box was handed round each member ably answered the question given her. A competition, “ Something new from something old,’’ resulted in many useful and interesting articles being exhibited, the first prize by popular vote being awarded to Mrs Callendar and the second to Miss M'Lcan. Supper was handed round by the hostesses of the evening.
