In the Chester Cup a champion Cheshire cheese, worth £5, goes to the owner of each place-getter. The absence of Royal Limond’s name from the steeplechase at Oamaru suggests that all is not well with the Limond gelding. He was sore when produced at Timaru last Saturday. “ The owner who bets with the bookmaker and then growls at tho small stakes being given by a club, is worse than a fool,” said Mr Stanford (president of tho Marton Racing Club), “ because stakes in New Zealand are based on totalizator figures.” The present handicapping system of trotters remains in force till July 31 next, but tho conference executive will move at nexi month’s meeting that that date bo deleted, so that the conference will have an opportunity of retaining the system. C. Elliott, who won the recent One Thousand Guineas on Kandy, was also successful on Four Course in that race last year, and oil Plack in 1924. Another of his good wins last year was on Brulette in the Oaks. Mr J. M, Samson’s Rampion—Down South yearling colt has been named Southdown, while the Paper Money— Entre Nos colt will race as Guarantee, and the Limond-Anklet colt as Garter Knight. Tho acceptances received for the Oamaru Meeting next Saturday are very satisfactory, and only a fine day is now required to make this fixture a success. A field of thirteen is promised in the Steeplechase, including the hurdlers Antrim Boy, Lancer, and Raineses. With Mr Samson’s team now located at Timaru, there arc not many horses working at Wingatui. Several of these are engaged at Ashburton, and S. G. Ware, who has been on the sick list since the local Winter Meeting, went north yesterday to superintend the running of First Song at Ashburton today.

Nauru was first favourite for the Victoria Grand National Hurdles when tlio last mail left Melbourne. Cockcrow, last gear’s winner, was third selection, while Captain’s Gift was not mentioned in. the betting. Other New Zealanders in Lucess, Land Mark, and Make Up were in the fifth line. Nomination and acceptance fees received by the Now Brighton Trotting Club last season amounted to £1,796 10s. Tlio gate receipts for the season were .CSt>7 Is, and training foes £66 7 s Od. When Prince Kwnw and Black Fox won the races on which the tote “daily double” was run at Newmarket on One Thousand Guineas Day, there was only one backer of that combination, and'he received £7Ol 11s for his half-sovereign. Gordon llichards, who headed last season’s list of winning jockeys in England, was going badly up to tho beginning of May. He had done more ritling than any other jockey at that time, but of his 113 mounts only 13 had won, and with E. Rickaby, he shared seventh place.

August 27. —'Taranaki Hunt Club August 27.—Otago Hunt Club.

TROTTING. July 9. —Mclhvcn Trotting Club. July 16.—Charity Meeting at Addington. August 6, 10, 12.—Now Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. August 27.—Auckland Trotting Club. September 3.—New Brighton Trotting Club. September 10.—AVcllinglon Trotting Club. October I.—Metbvcn Trotting Club.

According to Sydney ‘ Truth ’ the reason Love Song’s nominations were refused by the Victorian Clubs was on account of there being two leases of the New Zealander, one to a trainer named Cato, in whoso name Love Song raced, and the other to a man named O’Brien. The remarkable feature of these two leases is that the dates of both documents coincide. At Riccarton on Thursday morning Paris (G. Dempster) and Taramoa (V. Dempster) set out to negotiate a couple of rounds of the big fences, but Paris fell at the first. The pair were then taken back and completed the task safely, but Paris did not show much liking for the obstacles. King’s Counsel broke down when making his run in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase and he will probably require a good spell (says the Hawke’s Bay ‘ Herald ’). He looked like taking part in the finish when the mishap occurred. It was bad luck for his lady owner, Mrs Bottington, and lady trainer, Mrs A. M‘Donald, who has had a lot of trouble to keep King’s Counsel on his logs.

Pangolin has evidently made a good recovery from the injuries ho sustained several weeks ago, and he appears to have won the Napier Steeplechase very easily on Thursday. He is a good stayer, and now that he has taken kindly to big country is sure to play a prominent part in the _ big steeplechases at Trentham and Riccarton during the next few weeks. Tho following arc the records Of the principal stake winners from tho dominion at Randwick this season; —

C. Emerson has arranged to leave for Sydney some time next month. It is probable that his team will include Concentrate and Oratorian, also two more of Mr R. J. Murphy’s horses, also Mr W. O. Rutherford’s two-year-old colt by Chief Ruler from Comedy Queen. ‘This is the youngster for whom the name High Rank was chosen, but as it had been granted previously to Sir Charles Clifford the colt will race as Top Rank. Logan Park, who was sent to Western Australia a few months ago, registered his first success at Perth recently It was at his fifth start in tho Australian State that ho won tho Brennan Handicap of one mile and three-quarters. Erom 144yds behind in a 2min 22sec to the mile class he won easily by 12yds, recording 4min 7|sec, or a 2min ISJsec rate, which equals the State record, held by Desert Bells for one mile and three-quarters. In some notes on tho Chester Cup the Manchester (England) ‘ Sporting Chronicle ’ said tho race had the unenviable distinction of having been won by a murderer, William Palmer, the Rugcly surgeon who poisoned many of his near relatives and not a few of his friends. Palmer won tho Chester Cup of 1853 wth Goldfiuder, but being in bad odour with tho ring at tho time was unable to back his horse to the extent lie would have liked. He was reported to have won about £14,000, but most of this he dropped a few weeks later by recklessly laying against that great horse, West Australian, for the Derby. “ Have you anything to regret/William? ” his clergyman brother asked him after the trial which condemned him to public execution outside Stafford gaol in 1856. “Yes,” replied the unrepentant William. “ I haw never ceased to reproach myself for opposing West Australian.”

In moving tho adoption of the annual report at the annual meeting of members, of the Gore Racing Club, Mr Whittingham said that the year had ended with a debit, to some extent due to the had weather experienced for the Spring Meeting. As a consequence the committee had considered the advisability of not holding its Autumn Meeting, but by means of reducing the expenses and cutting the stakes, and also with tho support received from owners, the meeting had returned a slight profit. In view of the fact that the cost of training horses and nomination and acceptance fees had not been reduced, it was problematical whether the club could look forward to receiving the same measure of support from owners. In connection with the Autumn Meeting, tho club had just missed tho rebate of 1 per cent, on the totalisator turnover. The club, however, would receive tho benefit next year. A matter exercising the minds of racing club committees was the introduction of the five shilling totalisator. Unfortunately tho Gore Club raced early in the season, and if it adopted the five shilling totalisator it would be the first club to do so in .Southland.

Tho profit and loss account of the Avondale Racing Club for the year ended Mav 31 last shows a loss of £2,121 after writing off £I,OOO for depreciation, Revenue includes the following items: —Totaiisator receipts, including Government refund, £12,047; nominations and acceptances, £1.636 • gates, race cards, and privileges, £2,085; rents, grazing, track fees, fines, and sundry receipts, £344; members’ subscriptions, £394.
