OTTAWA CONFERENCE
AUSTRALIA’S POLICY STATEMENT BY MINISTERIAL DELEGATE Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, June 15. (Received June 15, at 9 a.m.) The Minister of Customs (Mr Gullett). one of Australia’s delegates to Ottawa, in a farewell speech, expressed the belief that substantial benefits would come to Australia from that conference, but success would not come if the decisions injured sections of the Empire. He considered it impossible to expect any benefits for wool. There were difficulties also in regard to wheat. The position in regard to meat was slightly better, while prospects were bright for other products. He was not going to Ottawa with a plan for writing the tariff up or down. The Commonwealth Government was resolute in regard to that aspect of its policy. THE FREE STATE DELEGATION. LONDON, June 14. (Received June 15, at 11.50 a.m.) Arrangements completed to-day for the representation of the Irish Free State at the Ottawa Conference provide that Mr De Valera shall head the delegation, accompanied by Mr Lemas (Minister of Industry and Commerce). Dr Ryan (Minister of Lands ‘and Fisheries), and probably Senator Connolly and Senator Johnson, the last representing Labour. EMPIRE CURRENCY ADVOCATED. OTTAWA, June 14. (Received Juno 15, at 12.30 p.m.) The hope that the conference would establish an Empire currency was expressed here by Mr J. Darling, a Midland Bank director. It would not affect the dominions’ note issues, he said. Silver should be stabilised as a world exchange medium. Parity could bo achieved between dominion currencies.
