EARLY SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlors’ Association was held on Tuesday afternoon; present—Messrs J. J. Mallard (in the chqir), E. Webster, W. Nicolson, G. S. M. M'Dermid, James Brown, W. H. Ferens, H. Baron, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, E. C. Hazlett, C. Morris, A. Eccles, R. H. Steele. James Wallace, F. W. Knight, C. C. Robertson. It was decided to ask Mrs James Macassoy to unveil tho memorial plate marking' tho landing place of the passengers of the John Wickliffc. The president will then hand tho plate over to the mayor (Mr R. S. Black) for and on behalf of the citizens of Dunedin.

It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Minister of Internal Affairs that the rock bearing a pinto commemorating tho landing of the Weller Bros., whalers, in 1831 ho made an historical reserve and gazetted accordingly. The rock is known to the Maoris as To Uma Kuri. It was decided to have an inspection of the skylights in the Early Settlers’ Hall, with a view to having them repaired whore necessary. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on Monday, Way 23. The president read a draft of the annual report, and tho treasurer presented a statement of the receipts and expenditure for the year.—These were approved. The following gifts were received and votes of thanks were passed to tho givers:—From Mr Thomas Walker, Agnew street, bound copy ‘ Defenders_ of New Zealand, 1887 ’; from Mr George Gray, George street, framed portrait of his late mother. Mrs James Gray, Dunedin (T. E. Millidgc, 1863) ; from Mrs R, Alexander, East Gore, framed portrait of her late mother, Mrs I. Wilson (Arima, 1863). Tho following deaths were reported:—■ Mrs John Hartley, Howe street, Dunedin (91), Velcro', 1801; Mrs Christina Reynolds, Maori Hill (77). Silistria, 1862; Mrs Catherine M'Kinley, Lawrence (90), arrived 1800’s; William Aitken, Invercargill (85), Simla, 1851; D. C. Cn moron, St. Kilda (82), william Akers, 1862. The following early settlers were enrolled ;—William Cross, Rollestnn rural delivery, Canterbury, arrived with parents from Melbourne, 1802; Mrs E. Bennett, Leith street (101), Peter Denny, 1805; Mrs Luey Draper, nee Smith, Hooper’s Inlet. Portobello, Nounnahal, 1858. Lady Helena Sidcy, Corstorphinc, Cavcrsham, was enrolled as a life member of the assoeiation. Twelve descendants wore also enrolled.
