"COME TO DUNEDIN WEEK”

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE Coloured lights, festoons of greenery, signs bidding welcome to visitors, and other forms of decoration and illumination will add to the beauty and attractiveness of the city during “ Como To Dunedin Week ” (May 28 to June 4). Thousands of lights are to be used, and some 1,200 or 1,500 yards of greenery. One striking feature will be a rustic arch, to be erected across the bottom of Stuart street and from which the word “ Welcome ’’ will greet the eyes of visitors coming in by train. The Octagon is to receive special attention. while the Town Hall will be picked out by a floodlight. The main streets (Princes and George streets) will lie illuminated from Manse street to Frederick street. These proposals were the subjects of reports that came before yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the executive of “ Come To Dunedin Week,” the mayor (Mr R. S. Black) being in the chair. Mr J. J. Marlow was appointed to act as deputy-chairman. A petition was received from a number of south end ratepayers asking that the illuminations should be extended as far as Manor place.—Mr Marlow said he thought the proposals already outlined were of a comprehensive nature, and he did not think the department would go beyond Manse street with th eillmninations. However, tho letter would be handed to the mayor. With reference to the Decorations Committee’s report concerning the erection of a rustic bridge across the bottom of Stuart street and the proposal that the arch be decorated with coloured lights, it was stated that the work could be underaken by men of the reserves department, with the assistance of the unemployed. The Secretary of the Dunedin Operatic and Dramatic Society advised that it was quite agreeable that any profits from the production on Saturday, May 28, should be applied to tho Unemployment, Relief Fund. The Secretary of the Head Masters’ Association wrote regretting that they could not allow their schools to take any active part in a children’s demonstration. They felt it was not in the best interests of tho children to do so. Mr Marlow said that h© was most hopeful of the results of the Horticultural Society’s show this week, and stated that the whole of the net proceeds would be devoted to the present effort.

Discussion took place as to the charge to bo made for admission to the tug-of-war competition, and Mr Marlow said that he had no doubt the tug-of-war would be one of the features of the week’s entertainment.—lt was decided that the charge be Is, with children half-price It was resolved that the prize money in each of the two classes bo £lO for first, and £7 for second. The action of the Band Committee in appointing the St. Kilda Band to play for the poster parade at the ball on June 2 was approved. Mr W. B. Steel announced that posters advertising “ Come To Dunedin Week ” were to be displayed on seventy railway stations throughout the South Island at no cost other than that of production. Mr J. L. Passmore, reporting on behalf of the Otago Motor Club, said that the club’s patrolmen had been distributing posters in the south, and ho asked the mayor if the chib could secure tho co-operation of the traffic officers in connection with the visitors in Dunedin for that week. There was no parking place outside the Motor Club’s rooms in Moray place, but visitors frequently came to the club for information as to various trips to be made. He hoped the traffic officers would not be too hard on visitors in respect to tho parking of cars there during that week. The Mayor thanked Mr Passmore for bringing the matter up. and said that attention would bo directed to the mater. It was decided that the mayor bo asked to appeal to the shopkeepers throughout the city to refrain from exhibiting sale notices on their windows or using any matter of that kind which would detract from the appearance of the premises.
