SOUTHLAND RACES. There was no fast work this morning, the order of the proceedings being slow pacing on No. 2 grass A heavy frost covered the ground, and tho tracks were heavy. The Orari trainer, H. J. Smith, arrived overnight with Inevitable, who was out doing pace work this morning, ami looks in great order. S. ■l. Ellis will ride him in tho Flying Handicap. Apacho suffered a recipience of tendon trouble, which put him put of action on tho eve of the Riverton Meeting, and will require several weeks’ spell.—lnvercargill Press Association, LADIES’ GOLF. The Auckland provincial golf championship commenced yesterday. Tho first round to-day resulted;—Miss M. Stevens beat Mrs G. R. Buttle, G and 5; Mrs G. Williams (Masterton) beat Miss K. Horton, 1 up at tho 19th; Mrs R. L. Wilson (present champion) heat Mrs K. Rutherford, 5 and 4; Miss N. M'Cormick beat Mrs G. M'Millan, 2 and 1; Mrs 11. S. Dcighton beat Mrs N. Weston (Heretauuga), 7 and C; Miss F. Rathbone beat Miss E. Culling, 4 and 3; Mrs J. M. Wilson beat Miss O. Stevens, 4 and 3; Mrs T. Hosking beat Airs G. F.
