GAOL ALPHABETICALLY
Initial letters in surnames are playing an important part in a certain vdlage of Lithuania. The whole of the inhaibtants were sentenced to a term of imprisonment for stealing wood from a State-owned forest, but as the capacity of the local gaol is ten prisoners at a time, the offenders have been ordered to serve their sentences in alphabetical order. Tho position is that the unfortunate man whose name begins with “ A ” is marched off to serve his sentence, while another whose name begins with “ Z ” will remain at liberty, possibly for another 'two or three years. In the meantime there may be a revolution that will nullify all sentences not then served.
