MELBOURNE STUDENTS
RESENTMENT AGAINST COMMUNISTS frail Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, May 3. “Ragging” in Melbourne University took a serious turn to-day. Some hundreds of students yesterday attempted to throw several supposed Communists into a lake nearby, owing to their revolutionary speeches at tne University Labour Club, but timely intervention by the police, who were summoned by telephone, prevented it. After lunch to-day students stormed the club house, captured three fellow-students who were taking refuge, carried them to a slimy lake within the grounds, threw them in, and 'refused to allow them to come out until they sang the National Anthem. Several women graduates played a leading part in the affair, and enjoyed the fun. ’ Eventually the trio stood erect in the water and sang one verse of the National Anthem, the whole company joining in, much out of tune but with great gusto. Four police officers were present, but did not interfere.
