GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The Mayor (Mr W. T. Smollie) presided at the monthly meeting of tho Green Island Borough Council hold last evening. Others present Avcre Crs G. Orange, I'. Tomkins, A. Logic, J. r i. Barnes, P. Winders, T. D. Mobster, J, Harvey, and T. M'Ahan. The Works Committee reported that a petition had boon received in connection Avith tho resurfacing of Will street, Abbotsford, and on its recommendation it Avas decided that the engineer prepare an estimate of the cost of the work. The Finance Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Whakatanc Borough Council urging ■support to have incorporated in the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill a clause providing for the reduction of rate of interest charged by the commercial banks operating in Ncav Zealand upon advances. The committee recommended that tho council support the attitude of the Whakatanc Borough Council. WATER AND LIGHTING. Ju his annual summary tho engineer stated in a report that the only extension undertaken during the past year had been the laying of a lour-mch main opposite Sunnyvale. Tho system bad given no trouble throughout the year, and continued to bo eftective and efficient. The arrangements that had been concluded with the Dunedin Fire Board Avould make available to a marked degree one of tho principal objects of tho Avatcr supply, although no doubt it Avonkl increase the consumption of Avatcr. Tho amount of water supplied to tho borough during the past twelve months amounted to 27,081 thousand gallons at a cost of £092 0s Od. Tho amount of water sold as extraordinary supplied was 15,131 thousand gallons, for Avhich the amount of £724 *” 11s Gd Avas charged. The Avater used for purely domestic purposes and lire extinguishing aviis 12,550 thousand gallons. The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. “Considerable maintenance Avork has been carried out on the Duncdin-ln-vereargill Main Higlnvay since my last report,” said the borough engineer (Mr F. J. Williams), in his report. The costs of maintenance for the balance of the financial year had been made up ami submitted to the various contributing authorities. The amount; Avas allocated as under: —Main Higlnvays Board, £7l 5s 8d; Green Island Council, £l2 2s 8d; Dunedin City Corporation, £0 9s; Taiori County Council, £4 19s 3d; a total of £94 10s 7d. Green Island-Taieri Mouth.—This section of tho highway had been graded as required during the month, and continued in excellent running order. The balance of maintenance expenditure amounted to £4O 14s Bd, and Avould bo paid by tho folloAving contributing authorities :—Main Highways Board, £3O 9s lOd; Green Island Council, £0 ss; Taiori County Council, £3 19s lOd ; a total of £4O 14s Sd. Fire Protection.—The successful tenderers for tho service station Avere Messrs Geddcs Bros, in the sum of £122 15s. Considerable progress had been made with the building, and the concrete foundations and floor arc completed and framing in position. It had been decided to erect the alarm hell between the service station and the Council Chambrs.

General Works.—ln conjunction with the employment of labour under the No, 5 U.B. Scheme, tbofollowing general works had been carried out Grading and reformation of part of Mu 1 ford street, Concord: deviation of the Kaikorai Stream, Miller Park; Idling to street level part of allotment 2, block 11, township of Abbotsford ; repair and reinstatement of culverts in Exmouth and Prosser streets; attention to Binnio street dump, and tbe general cleaning out of water tables. Particulars of Annual Expenditure.— I'be annual returns were now available, and it was ascertained that tho suin of ;C 1,17 G 12s lid had been spent in wages under tho following headings Lighting, £7 3s 4d; water maintenance, £SB 19s 8d; cemetery, £2IG Us 8d; general maintenance, £447 19s 4d ; supervision, etc., unemployed relief, £295 Is 3d; main highways, £35 8s 10d; Brighton boundary, £23 8s 7d; Brighton Borough, £3 Os 6d; sanitary, £7 Os sd; reserves, £1 17s sd; Eire Board, 5s 4d; water extensions, £l2 5s 9d; use of power grader, £9 Os lid; crossings, £0 2s sd; collection of dog licenses, £1 2s Gd ; traffic, ISs —a total of £1,170 12s lid.

Unemployed Belief.—lt would ho seen that the cost of administrating tho U.B. No. 5 Scheme was £295 Is 3d, to which had to bo added tho use of the lorry, which at schedule rates amounted to £3G 12s. The amount of material used amounted to .0109 10s Bd, making a total of £7-11 4s lid. The purchase of the tools required for the workmen had been made directly by the town clerk, and ho would require to add this cost to the amount above stated, lu

addition it had to bo remembered that some portion of the salaries of both the toAvn clerk and the borough engineer must ho allocated to this Avork. It Avould thus lie scon that tho cost of administration of this particular fund had been a considerable strain on the finances of tho borough. Main Higlnvays.—The total expenditure on the • Dunedin-Invercargill main highway for the twelve months had amounted to £3lO 19s Id, and had been allocated to the following authorities:— Main Highways Board, £228 9s; Dunedin City Corporation, £22 Is lid; Taicri County Council, £lB 8s 2d; Green Island Borough, £42 —a total of £3lO 19s Id.

The sum of £lO9 7s 9d had been the total cost of maintenance on the Taieri Mouth Higlnvay for tho_ past tAvelvo months, and had been paid by tho folloAving;—Main Higlnvays Board, £B2 0s Id; Taicri County Council, £ll 5s 8d; Green Island Borough, £lO 2s—a total of £lO9 7s 9d.

Building Permits.—There had boon a considerable falling off in the number of building permits issued for tho year in keeping Avith tho experience of other local authorities. The total amount of buildings for Avhich permits had been issued aviis £6,946, which, of course, did not include small alterations, erection of motor garages, and such other buildings as do not call for detailed plans and specifications. Plant.—During the year the tractor and trailer Avere dispensed Avith, and a 30cAvfc lorry purchased.
