UNEMPLOYMENT

PORT CHALMERS POSITION ACUTE

INADEQUATE ALLOCATIONS After its last fortnightly mooting the Port Chalmers Unemployment Committee forwarded the following telegram to the Rt. -Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Employment):— “ Allocations being granted to Port Chalmers totally inadequate to meet wages of men offering for relief work. Registered men number 302, and only £132 allocated for week’s wages. Increase in allocation imperative.” A similar telegram was sent to Mr A. E. Ansell, M.P., asking him to interview the Minister on the subject. Mr Coates acknowledged the telegram, replying that the matter of allocation was having attention, and any possible adjustment would be made. Mr Ansoil replied stating that he was pressing the claim for extra assistance, and the Minister had wired for additional information. ; This morning the following telegram was received from the Unemployment Commissioner: —“ Amended scale of relief rates and abolition of stand-down week not meantime applicable to your centre.” After receipt of that information Cr T. Anderson introduced a deputation from the local unemployed to the mayor (Mr J. Watson). The deputation consisted of six relief workers. Mr A. Campbell, a member of the local Unemployment Committee, and Cr J. Annan were also present. Mr W. Mead and Mr J. Duncan stated the position of the unemployed. The allocation for this week was inadequate, and an increased allocation sufficient to make up for the stand-down week until such time as the new scheme was made applicable to Port Chalmers was necessary. Mr Watson said he would make representations to Wellington, and also place tho men’s case before the next mooting of tho Unemployment Committee. Tho Mayor then despatched tho following telegram to Mr Ansell: — “Position of unemployed very acute at Port Chalmers. Increase of this week’s allocation absolutely essential. More men offering for work every day. Will you please interview Unemployment Board, also ascertain when new scheme will operate here?”

STAND-DOWN WEEK

Many complaints are being made concerning the fact that stand-down week has not yet been abolished, despite the statement made by Mr Coates regarding the Unemployment Board’s policy after May 1. The local Labour Department has received no instructions to alter the present system, and everybody in authority in Dunedin seems to be quite in the dark concerning the future.

The £IOO Dance Committee had all arrangements working smoothly, and in this respect tho thanks of tho committee are due to the mayoress (Mrs R. S. Black), and the lady bowlers of the city for their efforts in assisting the committee. Already several parties of prospectors have been equipped, and, as evidence ol the success with which at least one oi tho parties has met, a fine sample ol gold obtained by two inexperienced men was on exhibition in tho hall. (Unsuccess of the function was largely dm to the untiring efforts of the president (Mr W. Rowlands), the secretary (M. 11. F. Payton), and the members of tin committee.
