miscellaneous wanteps. (From ‘ Otago Daily Times,’ April 29.) ALL IS NOT GOLD. “ All is not gold that glitters ” in the matter of gold buyers at the present time. A Dunedin resident tells a story of' deception which might bo of help to others in their dealings with those importunate persons who are at present making a house-to-house canvass in an endeavour persuade householders to part with their old gold. A local householder was approached yesterday by a gold buyer, and, having some old gold to dispose of, presented it to tha buyer. An offer of 32s was made for an assortment which included a disused dental plate. When the offer was refused tho buyer raised his bid to 345, and remarked that that was more than any other dealer in town would bo prepared to offer. Tho householder, remarking that he knew nothing of such matters, said ho would refer the articles to a dealer in town, and suggested that the buyer should ring or call again. On taking tho articles to a city dealer, the householder was tendered a cheque for £4 2s 9d, which he accepted with alacrity. The dental plate, for which tho buyer at tho door had offered him a maximum of 17s, brought no less than £2 7s Dd in the city, and the total proceeds of tho sale in town were £2 8s 9d in excess of what tho itinerant buyer said was his highest bid. It would seem to bo another case of making hay while tho sun shines at tho expense of tho unfortunate uninitiated.
