BARNSLEY SENTENCED " HUNGER MARCH " SUGGESTION [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 3. On a charge of inciting to lawless* ness, Herbert Edwin Barnsley, an un. employed leader, was sentenced to si* weeks with hard labour. The Magistrate (Mr Mosley) said; “ The forces of law and order must be maintained, and will be maintained do* spite the ebullitions of a few irresponsible people. There are few who do no* abide by the laws of the country, made for our guidance and protection, and we must see that they are not impaired. The punishment given accused will not be made exemplary.”, Barnsley, who is fifty-two years old, indicated that he intended appealing. The charge on which he was convicted related to a suggestion by him for a hunger march to the Prime Minister’s farm at Cheviot. A second charge was dismissed.
